Animal Infodump Time!

I for one love animals. My favourite are sea creatures and I would love for the chance to just ramble on and on and on about animals so I made a thread for it! Where everyone can share a fun fact about their favourite animal!

I love how intelligent and interesting they are. It's so cool the way they can change colours and they move around. Definitely one of my favourites 🙂 I'll have to find some good gifs to share!

I don't have any cool facts to share (yet), although I had a renewed respect for pigeons after learning that a scientist called B.F. Skinner once taught some of them to peck when they saw a certain colour e.g. red or green, and do a bunch of other cool stuff, which you can read more about here

On the pigeon note @letitgo, there's a pigeon memorial in France acknowledging the sacrifice we had many of them make during WWI.

We see them everywhere and people are more likely to be annoyed by them and associate them with disease, but we have made them do quite a few things.

What a great idea for a thread @N1ghtW1ng!!

My favourite animal is the elephant! One cool fact I found out about them literally today is that they can understand pointing!

For reference, animals generally don't understand pointing unless they've been domesticated by humans, like dogs

@Birdeye ah that's awesome! Cheetahs are so cool.

@safari93 as if I couldn't love elephants anymore, I learn a new thing! It's so cool that they can understand pointing!

The above penguin is Sir Nils Olav, he is seen inspecting the King's Guard of Norway.

He is the colonel-in-chief of the Norwegian King's Guard. This is the third penguin in the role.

It's time to talk about one of my earliest favourite animal, the cheetah.

Look at the adorable, cute thing. One of the cutest deadly predators out there. While finding gifs, I found a few leopards 😛 But they are definitely not the same big cat! If you ever see a cheetah in a tree, it's not a cheetah, because they can't climb.

Two of my favourite things about the cheetah is their appearance and the way they move/their speed. I love the two stripes that run down their face from their eyes, affectionately known as "tear lines". Apparently, they could be to protect from the bright sun, like sunglasses built into the face and/or to help cheetahs see long distances. Which is awesome. They usually hunt in the daytime too, because their night vision isn't all that great. They're also a bit of a chicken when it comes to other big cats, they'll leave their food instead because they're one of the smaller of the big cats.

Now for how they move! (in slow motion!)

They're so fast! Even though they can't keep their top speed up for very long, they can run at around 110-120km/h! 😄 😄 That's so fast! You can't see it in the gif, but they also use their tails to help them stabilise and steer. The way their spines bend and twist to help them move and turn after their prey, it's beautiful!

(here's more gifs!)

Aren't they amazing?

Thanks so much for starting this thread @N1ghtW1ng!!

I don't have an animal fact to share right now (because I am super tired and brain isn't functioning greatly), but saw the cheetah post and gosh, I love the idea of this thread.

On the topic of cheetahs, one of my favourite things to have learnt about them has been their history with us. Like, the big cats are ferocious predators, and we really shouldn't domesticate them, but previously cheetahs were kinda domesticated due to being the most docile of the big cats. In ancient Egypt in particular they were highly regarded and cared for.
Ever since I learnt that I've seen cheetahs a bit differently.
