Introduce Yourself Here - July 2018!

Well folks, it's official: we're now halfway through the year! And with that usually comes winter holidays from school/uni/TAFE, so we thought we'd make this month's IYSH thread holiday themed!

So, tell us...

Do you have anything fun planned for the holidays?

What's your favourite thing to do in winter?

How do you maintain structure/routine when you're not at class or work?

Social media can give us major FOMO if our holidays don't consist of snorkelling in the Caribbean or climbing Mt Everest... How can we learn to embrace the quietness?

And finally...

What's your favourite holiday-themed gif? (Click here if you need to find one :P)

hello 🙂

Do you have anything fun planned for the holidays?

I'm hoping to catch up with some friends, at least the ones who haven't left me for warmer weather! Apart from that just working and trying to avoid the cold.

What's your favourite thing to do in winter?

There's nothing better than curling up with a hot cup of tea (and ofc forgetting about it and needing to remake one multiple times) and a good book or movie. Rewatching a netflix series is always good to do too!

How do you maintain structure/routine when you're not at class or work?

I try to set up a few goals for when I have a day off, usually it starts with a sleep in (planned or not!). I also try to make a bit of a timetable so I can tick things off.

Social media can give us major FOMO if our holidays don't consist of snorkelling in the Caribbean or climbing Mt Everest... How can we learn to embrace the quietness?

I really enjoy going outside and exercising but its a bit tough to do in the winter, so this month I've taken advantage of a deal at a gym and started going! It's a bit intimidating at times as I have no idea what to do, but I always feel really energised after, like I've achieved something for the day.  So even when scrolling through insta at the end of the day I feel a bit better about myself.

I'm a bit late to this (again!) but thought I'd participate anyway...

Do you have anything fun planned for the holidays?

Not really... Unless you consider reading fun, in which case, yes. LOTS of reading! And maybe some writing.

What's your favourite thing to do in winter?

Curl up with a blanket, a cup of tea and a book.

How do you maintain structure/routine when you're not at class or work?

The short, honest answer, is that I barely manage it, haha. But I try to get up at around the same time every day (usually 7am) and go to bed at the same time every night (usually 9-10pm).

Social media can give us major FOMO if our holidays don't consist of snorkelling in the Caribbean or climbing Mt Everest... How can we learn to embrace the quietness?

First off, I LOVE the phrase "embrace the quietness." As for how to do that... I think for me it might mean avoiding social media at certain times. It also involves doing more of the 'quiet' activities that I enjoy, such as reading. And actively reminding myself that there can be just as much joy (if not more) in the small moments.

Do you have anything fun planned for the holidays?

I don't really get holidays as i'm not at school so i'll be working through most of it, but on the weekends I have a few events to go out and stuff which should be fun.

What's your favourite thing to do in winter?

I love snuggling up in bed and watching netflix or youtube videos (a little bit too much), sometimes its hard to get up! Being warm and cosy is so nice when its cold out. I also love cooking hot meals like chicken laksa soup for example 🙂

How do you maintain structure/routine when you're not at class or work?

To be honest i'm really bad at it, when I don't have responsibility i slowly just get into a lazy mode. I end up going to bed way to late, which means waking up late, and It is a vicious cycle. I struggle with sleeping patterns even during the busy times of my life.

Social media can give us major FOMO if our holidays don't consist of snorkelling in the Caribbean or climbing Mt Everest... How can we learn to embrace the quietness?

I don't find I get super super jealous as I do often enjoy staying home watching movies and going out with my friends, buuuuut that doesn't say I don't sometimes wish I was there. I just remember that everyone has their time to go and do that stuff.

I thought I'd stay true to my word and answer the questions (seeming as it's now the 20th :P)

Do you have anything fun planned for the holidays?

I've just started back at uni so holidays are now over. Buuut I did do some fun things. I went to Brisbane for a week with my partner, we celebrated our anniversary and I spent plenty of time catching up on TV shows 🙂

What's your favourite thing to do in winter?

Hide indoors where it's warm and deny that winter is a thing that exists (hard when you live in Victoria ðŸ˜‚)

How do you maintain structure/routine when you're not at class or work?

For me, having a similar bed time each night and not staying up too late is the biggest thing. Having reminders on my phone to GET OFF IT is really useful hahaha 😛 I also use a diary to plan things, so I can get myself out of the house and being active

Social media can give us major FOMO if our holidays don't consist of snorkelling in the Caribbean or climbing Mt Everest... How can we learn to embrace the quietness?

I'm a bit of a homebody anyway so don't find it as hard as some other people. If I find myself feeling jealous or inadequate it's usually a sign that it's time to take a break from social media. I remind myself that I need quiet in order to recharge so I can do more exciting stuff later 🙂

Do you have anything fun planned for the holidays?

Preparing to go on study abroad in a few months so I'll be fairly busy with organising that ðŸ˜…, apart from that volunteering and maybe go out to some museums/art gallery exhibitions or markets etc

What's your favourite thing to do in winter?

I guess watching netflix/films, reading, going for walks or doing something outdoors but also maybe go and see if there are any events or any sort of exhibitions around where I am

How do you maintain structure/routine when you're not at class or work?

Going to the gym and volunteering, also visiting family interstate

Social media can give us major FOMO if our holidays don't consist of snorkelling in the Caribbean or climbing Mt Everest... How can we learn to embrace the quietness?

By keeping yourself busy like volunteering, exploring where you live, but also do stuff you never had time to do when you were at university/tafe

And finally...

Do you have anything fun planned for the holidays?

Just catching up with friends and relaxing. I'm just coming off of 3 weeks of prac (which is why I've been absent on the forums recently) so I'm going to try to really relax and recharge. Also I get to ease out of my moonboot over the holidays so by the time next semester starts I won't be in the dreaded boot!

What's your favourite thing to do in Winter?

I love to sit outside in the Winter sunshine and read a good book, my cats normally come chill with me which is nice. I really see it as a time to recharge and I love to absorb all the sunshine.

I also love finding a cosy café and reading a book or catching up with friends when it's raining.

How do you maintain structure/routine when you're in class or work?

I still set my alarm (though its for 7.00am instead of 6.30am) and try to go to bed at a decent hour. I find sleep is really important for me and if I don't have that structure then things aren't as stable.

How can we embrace quietness?

Honestly just seeing it as a time for forced self-care! I find life can get so busy during the term times that quiet is a welcome change. I also try to plan something every couple of days during the holidays so I get out of the house and I'm not sitting at home doing nothing the whole break.

Do you have anything fun planned for the holidays?

not really, I’m leading a kids club on the first week with a friend, I have to go to school and work on my major design project for design and technology every day of the second week, I also have to do work placement for child studies on the third week (I go to a private school so I have an extra week). I also have a tonne of homework and assessment tasks to do.

whats your favourite thing to do in winter?

sleep, watch movies, have pyjama days, sleepovers, make heaps of soup, binge watch a tv series on Netflix.

how do you maintain structure/routine when you’re not in school or work?

ummmm I don’t... I kinda just lose routine and then try and find it again when school comes back.

how do we embrace the quietness?

for me, embracing quietness is taking advantage of being home alone or everyone in my family is still sleeping and by staying in bed till lunchtime reading, drawing, thinking, texting, social mediaing, praying etc...

Welcome @Jesssister2001 !!

Thought it was time I did one of these intros too!

Do you have anything fun planned for the holidays?

I have a trip planned to Melbourne which will be fun!

whats your favourite thing to do in winter?

I love going for walks in that beautiful winter sun! Crisp air, and warm sunshine is a perfect combination for a relaxing walk Smiley Happy

how do you maintain structure/routine when you’re not in school or work?

Daily routine is key! Having an activity planned for early in the day - like exercise, or coffee with a friend, gets me out of the house, and into the day.

how do we embrace the quietness?

Cuddling my cat is a great way to embrace the quietness.

I also love to get my journal out and write down some thoughts.
