Year 10 Is Rough

It's that time of term when I decide to vent here.

For Victorians its Week 8 now, and like many others I'm already rather burnt out. Despite many student-free days so far this month I just want Term 1 to end. I can't believe there's still 3 weeks in Term 1 before the holidays!!!

The start to Year 10 hasn't been the best, many lessons have been boring and I've had many instances when I wish I was in Year 11. I'm still struggling to find Work Experience spots as I'm having difficulty finding out which places are even offering it and I'm at school each day tired and only more tired when I get home. Not saying I want to head back into online learning though.

The only extra-curricular I have atm is band but I'm thinking of quitting band next year for a part-time job (probably Saturday shifts). I feel like I'm going to have the same problems finding Work Experience as finding an actual job so I'm really stressed out about it. They were both things I would've gone in depth to discover during the summer holidays but my parents wouldn't let me go out for a majority of January which was really frustrating.

At the moment I'm contemplating about unannounced assessments and trying to find a job. I've decided to wait until after Semester 1, that way I would've already done Work Experience and have an idea of how heavy I need to work throughout the rest of Senior School, particularly since I want to accelerate to 3/4 Further next year. I feel like having a job will boost my productivity and minimise procrastination on Saturdays

Hi @yeah_it_tahtperson thank you for sharing with us today. I'm sorry to hear you're feeling so burnt out. As a fellow Victorian, I can only imagine how exhausting it must be, not to mention any changes that may have been put in place due to Covid.

I can definitely relate when you say you are struggling to find work experience. While I havent been in school for a few years now, I don't think I will ever forget the struggles I had trying to find one. In saying that, I actually found it easier to find a job than I did finding Work experience. Do you mind me asking what industry or role, you are looking at completing work experience in? I am also if wondering if maybe your school would be able to help you with this.

I'm also sorry to hear that your start to year 10 hasn't been the best. It does sound pretty frustrating that you weren't able to go out and discover some of these things when you had time in January. You also mentioned unannounced assignments, which are such a stressful thing on their own, I can only imagine how it would feel to add searching for work experience and finding a job to that mix. What kinds of things do you do for yourself, when things become too stressful or overwhelming?

If you are up for a bit of reading, we do have a few articles that might be worth having a read of, you can find them here. But I also just want to remind you that myself and the online community are all here for you 💜

Hi,

Last month, I put in a Work Experience placement for ACMI but I don't find out if I'm accepted til April. If I don't get in I won't be picky about Work Experience because its hard enough finding a place I go to that offers Work Experience as is. Fortunately, I think my careers advisor can help me out.

I asked one of my favourite food outlets for a job and I hope that goes well. When I'm stressed and/or overwhelmed I tend to procrastinate by watching YouTube.

I'm very happy to be reminded the community is here for me as I feel safe venting here.

Hi @yeah_it_tahtperson

We definitely are here for you and the feelings you have are understandable since there's a lot of pressure for younger people to get ahead and ready for the world. Also procrastinating when we get stressed is totally normal but it's important to know when we have to jump back into things. From reading your post you sound like someone who likes to stay on top of things, be productive, and get ahead which are all great qualities. I do just want to remind you that high school is not the be-all-end-all, and there will be many many opportunities that come by in the future.

Also, how has the job application worked out for you if you are comfortable sharing it?

hey @yeah_it_tahtperson good on your for getting those referrals approved, that's a big first step towards the rest of the application! you must be quite busy with school, being so late in the semester, and also juggling band + searching for work experience, so it's really awesome that you're also applying for a job. how are you coping with your school workload at the moment?

Honestly, unless I have multiple ongoing assessments then its not that bad! My mood and attitude just ruin it sometimes.

Thanks for that! I submitted my application + resume on Friday and I hope it goes well.

go you 🤩! that's a huge achievement, i hope you're able to feel proud of yourself!

it's good to hear that school isn't too bad at the moment, i hope the next few weeks before your break are kind to you in terms of assessment. it's almost unbelievable just how much of an affect current assessments can have on your mood, i certainly felt similar when i was still at school. is there anything that you like to do to take care of yourself when you're busy with assessment?

Welcome back!
