Poor Physical Health

For most of my childhood my parents haven't really been conscious about my physical health, never went to the GP for general checkups and parents were more reliant on at home remedies than seeing a doctor even when it was bulk billed.

The real concern is that they had rarely, if ever took me to the dentist pre-COVID and now I have periodontitis. Apparently, it can't be healed and now my gums really hurt easily, I just wished my parents put a weaker emphasis on my academics and instead focused on my physical health beyond participating in sport lessons I don't do because I don't like them.

For the amount of time that my parents spent calling their friends, I'm surprised they never bring up health at all.

Hi @yeah_it_tahtperson

I'm sorry to hear that you weren't able to get more support for your physical well-being growing up. I can see why you would be frustrated in this situation especially since you are now having to take extra care of your dental hygiene. I'm sorry to hear that it's been a painful experience.

I'm wondering if this is a conversation that you have now had with your parents and if they've shifted their attitude to supporting your well-being more than just your academics, as both are very important as you have suggested.

I wish you a wonderful week ahead đź’™

Hi @yeah_it_tahtperson ,

I hear how frustrating it can be to have different values to your parents. It must be so uncomfortable to know you have periodontitis which could have been prevented.

I hear you feel that your parents could have made a difference to whether you are now living with the this gum disease or not, including not placing so much pressure on academics and sports.

At the same time, as much as this gum disease cannot be 'cured', there are ways to slow down the stages. Have you been able to speak to you dentist about it?

I hope that you find the comfort you need right now.

Hey @yeah_it_tahtperson

I'm sorry to hear that. It must be really frustrating to be dealing with a condition that may have been preventable. I'm glad that although your parents focus more on academics, you understand the value of health. After all, without good health, it can become difficult to get other things done.

Have you been able to talk to your parents about this?

I hope you are doing ok today ❤️
