Sleep Schedules

Hey everyone,

It's important to keep to a sleep schedule to help make your sleep better and such and so on. I personally find sticking to schedules hard. There's always so many other things that happens, it usually takes me forever to actually fall asleep and physically getting up in the morning is hard. But, I know it's important, and I hope it'll help me feel less tired so I am going to share a general idea of my sleep schedule, in an attempt to get myself to follow it.

Nighttime- 11pm in bed, lights out, trying to sleep. Morning-6am-7am get up.

I've been considering things to add to my night routine once I've gotten into bed. I used to read, but I would rather not have to get up to use the bathroom after finishing, plus, I'm really bad at stopping. 😛 Last night, I actually did some drawing, which is what I was going to do from my desk, except I got distracted by videos.

I'm hoping to stick to a nightly routine of- brush teeth, bathroom, good nights, room, drawing, extra good nights if parents still awake, bathroom, bed, lights out. Hopefully, that'll solve the needing to pee after being in bed for almost an hour and if I use my soft lamp while drawing, I can lull myself to calmness of sleep and then hopefully fall asleep quicker. Fingers crossed!

@ivory it's great idea, it's what I do when I have to get up for work.
I think
"when I get up I'm going to have the best warm shower"
"When this shower is doing I'm going to have the nicest breakfast ever"
"On my way to work I'm going to listen to the best music"
Hahaha

Sleep is so important and the hardest thing for me is reducing the amount of technology I use before bed! I know it's best not to use any technology at least an hour before bed but I struggle with this sometimes haha.

I find the computer software f.lux (it's free!) really helpful becuase it reduces the amount of blue light emitted from your computer/laptop when it gets late, so if you're staying up on facebook or doing an assignment late at night it won't effect your sleep as much 🙂

@lokifish well... I stayed up till 11:30 drawing because I was really enjoying it. I was going to open up a new page unfinished or not but I'm loving this bird too much 🙂
This morning I was soo tired but I still got up a bit after seven. 🙂
I seriously wish I could go to bed that early, I'm afraid that it'd take too long for me to go to sleep. Although getting up that early would be nice. I wanted to take the dogs out but it was already too hot a bit after seven am 😞

Tonight should be better though, I'll definitely give myself more drawing time.

Hey @N1ghtW1ng I think making a sleep schedule is a great idea and sharing it here could really help heaps of other users too! Generally I don't have trouble falling asleep, for which I am extremely thankful. I'm one of those people who goes to bed early and gets up early, and if I don't get my 8 hours, I really notice the difference.

Assuming tonight will be the first time you implement this new routine, I hope it goes well!

Hey @N1ghtW1ng

Thanks for sharing - if I notice you're online after bedtime I might have to remind you haha 😛

Thats great that you've organised a bit more a pattern, I normally have a routine but it's summer holidays so a bit messed up but normally looks like this

- 10:30, in bed colouring (low light), reading (low light) or whatever else

- 11:00 lights off, room completely dark, rain on

- 6:15 Get up

Thats the plan I try to follow when I'm working, I sometimes try to adjust it to fit the gym or pool in before work but with current plan that isn't on it, I normally go at night now instead

@j95 holidays can be so messy when you try and stick to routines. I'll probably make myself a day routine too, but only once uni starts.
I should really be off my computer (and RO :P) By 10pm-10:30pm. I wanted to be in bed lights out between those times but the night before last I did that and didn't actually get to sleep until after midnight so it'll probably be similar, as in falling asleep around midnight, but at least it hopefully won't feel like that.

@letitgo tonight will be the first night of actually doing it as a set routine. Since Christmas Eve I've been trying to stick to this sort of routine although the past couple of mornings I've been out of bed at 10am so... not good 😛
I'm so jealous that you can just fall asleep. It honestly takes me so long, at least an hour if I end up checking the time. It's part of the reason I wanted to get into bed earlier, but it's probably not worth it in the long run.

I really hope that by doing bed routine, then doing something like drawing (because let's face it, I'll never be able to stop myself from reading :P) And then going to use the bathroom and then sleep will work. It'll certainly be tough for me, but after doing it night after night, it'll work. 🙂

@N1ghtW1ng How did you go with trying this last night? 🙂

Personally I'm an early riser and need a lot of sleep (generally 9 or 9.5 hours), so mine tends to look like this:

8-9pm: turn off phone, low lights, get into pjs, brush teeth, moisturise

9-9:30pm: go to bed

6-6:30am: get up

@lokifish, omg! You have made me feel normal! I need about 9-9.5 hours sleep and I have always felt abnormal, like I am a sleeping bear.. 8 hours doesn't even do it for me.

I usually don't have to wake up at a set time but when I am doing well with a routine, I try to start studying at 9am.

So at night I will usually:

  • Shower
  • Put face creams on
  • Brush teeth
  • Hop into bed
  • Plan the next day (usually what I am going to eat)/Watch TV (I know that is seriously bad hahaha) I would love to start reading instead. To be honest though, I usually watch TV laying down in bed, so I usually get tired/fall asleep.

I had returned with an update to my sleep schedule! 😄
So it hasn't been going super well. The night-time's been alright but I have been struggling to get up at 7am so I am modifying it to 8am (although if I do wake up anywhere between that time, I'll get up but say if I wake up between 6am and 7am, I'll stay in bed). I felt better after getting up at 9am so I figure that 8am is a good middle ground (literally :P) I like to keep it vague, my wake-up time so I don't feel pressured to set an alarm.
As for nighttime, I've actually decided to read instead, I'm rereading my Percy Jackson books, so because I've read them I can stop myself as near to 11pm as I can get a chapter to and then go to sleep.

Thanks for sharing your sleep schedule @T4ils. I wouldn't say that watching TV is so bad (it's better than being on the phone) whatever works for you 😛

I try to keep my schedule flexible because sometimes stuff changes (like holidays!!) but as a general rule at about 10 or 10.30 I'll switch off, brush teeth and shower if I havent already, and just kind of... get ready for bed and maybe potter around tidying or something for a bit.

I sleep with my partner so usually once lights go off I feel the need to have a deep and meaningful discussion, especially if I'm having an episode or something particularly stressful is happening. this helps me sleep if im feeling anxious! hes one of those people who can sleep whenever though and he usually falls asleep while I'm talking (i don't care, i just like talking)

I don't have a set wake up time but I try to get up at 9am and Do Something, like cleaning or some other chore. just so I can get moving and productive, then I'll do relaxing things like gaming in the afternoon. I want to start getting up earlier and going for runs but..... could be unlikely hahaha

@ivory I am so glad to hear that you (try to) get up at 9am because I always feel so guilty getting up that late (although I am trying to wake up earlier, so that when uni comes and I have to get up extra early, it'll be easier)
I've kind of been failing on the getting up part though. I wake up sure enough, but I'm considering reading for a bit, at least I won't be going back to sleep, maybe I'll eventually get used to physically getting up 😛

OH YEAH i forgot to add i usually wake up at 5.30am because thats when my boyfriend leaves for work and he wakes me up usually. falling asleep after that means i sleep for longer than if i had uninterrupted sleep till 7 or 8

actually getting out of bed is so hard, especially in winter ! my strategy is to get REALLY HECKING EXCITED about breakfast. like i think about it up to 24 hours beforehand and i tell everyone "im so excited for breakfast tomorrow its gonna be so good" just so its easier to jump out of bed like BREAKFAST TIME YEAH

Welcome back!
