Our Guide To: Dealing with World News

It's fair to say that a lot is going on, and it can be pretty hard to make sense of it and how it makes us feel. 😣 It's normal to go through a range of emotions, and they might even change depending on the day. You might feel:

  • shocked + confused

  • sad + worried

  • overwhelmed

  • disbelief + numb

  • angry

Learning to cope with alarming world news is easier with good support and a little practice. So, we've got some tips to help you if you're having a hard time 👇

1. Decide how much time you'd like to spend on social media.

I'm not going to lie and say this one is easy - it takes a bit of discipline to put boundaries in place with social media. It's hard to pull away when breaking news pops up all day, TikTok is going off, and your friends are messaging you all at once. Social media can be fun, but it can also be full of misinformation and information overload.

If you want to learn how to step away and give your brain a rest, we've got some great content that I recommend checking out:

2. Be in the moment

See a friend, cuddle your pet, go for a walk, make a yummy meal, connect with your passions and hobbies. Doing little things to meet your needs can help ground you in the present moment and calm your body.

3. Share your experience

It's always okay to ask for help. Human beings are happier and healthier when we connect, especially during tough times. Consider opening up to someone you trust, but if that's not an option, we've got some ideas for you:

  • Create a thread, get it off your chest and chat with others feeling similar.

  • Think about whether speaking with a counsellor or psychologist would be helpful.

  • Search for a support service using directories like Ask Izzy and Find a Psychologist

  • Check out our professional help collection for guidance on finding the right help.

We are here for you, community, don't hesitate to reach out for support. 🗣
