How to support someone going through a tough time
- Actively listen to them - make them feel heard, provide your full attention.
- Simply be there for them - offer a shoulder to cry on, check in with them, hang out with them.
- Offer to assist them - e.g., completing small tasks for them.
- Respect their boundaries - allow them to dictate how much support/space they need and what details they wish to share.
- Validate their feelings / avoid toxic positivity - acknowledge what they are going through and avoid telling them how they should feel; avoid statements such as "it could be worse" or "everything happens for a reason."
- Encourage self-care!
- Encourage them to seek professional support - e.g., psychologist, counsellor, crisis support if needed (i.e., Lifeline).
