Have you experienced unemployment or underemployment? Have any strategies helped you to cope with this situation?

I've been pretty lucky that when I lost one of my jobs a few years ago I was able to get back into work pretty quickly and swiftly without having too many dramas. So I don't have to much to say on this but I'll read. I know most of my family is unemployed though

I spend a fair bit of time on my selection criteria, and research the org before i get started, a good place to figure out what the organisation you're applying for is after is to look at their annual reports, media releases and anything else they're talking about publicly. I make sure the examples i give fit what the org is after. Once i've written something I get at least two other people to tear it to pieces and then i write it again 😛 I guess everyone does that though? Also always use STAR= Situation, Task, Action, Result. For example, Situation: I didn't have a job, Task: I needed to write a resume, Action: I wrote a resume, Result: i got a job that was 10% better than some other job, yay! And if i don't get the job i ALWAYS ask for some feedback, generally you can learn a looot from what they have to say and asking for feedback is sometimes a great way to keep the connection with the organisation you're applying for going. I once got offered a different job a week later after doing this 🙂

A lot of Schools, Uni's and Tafe's will have a look at your resume too. For example in Tafe's keep an eye out fo a section called Career services, where you can generally get a bit of help writing a heaps good application. Allso Youth centres can sometimes help (depends though). Here's one with some good info for example 🙂

Time for the next Q!

What can you do if you feel like you aren't 'good enough' at your job?

What can you do if you feel like you aren't 'good enough' at your job?

You can ask for feedback from your colleagues and boss. Then work out a plan to improve. You can also ask yourself what being good enough looks like.

My entire life can be described in one sentence: It didn't go as planned and that's okay. ツ

I ahave had that thought a bit within the last couple weeks as I've been there only about 2 months. But I'm always asking questions and I know that if I'm not doing ok I will be told and I can ask for feedback if I'm concerned. I have a good relationship with my manager and boss which makes it easier 😊

I think a lot of the time we can be really good at noticing what we aren't very good at or having some crazy high standard that we set for ourselves. Both of which often don't really line up with what matters in a lot of jobs. On top of that, ;earning and occasionally making a few mistakes is normal and if your work can't handle that then that's a problem with the place you work for, not you!

I reckon feedback and communication are very important. Having people that encourage you help you with the mistakes you make from the start could help prevent this.

I like the sound of that @roseisnotaplant!

Here are two final post GR questions anyone can feel free to answer!  If you didn't manage to make it feel free to answer the questions asked during the GR as well!

What strategies could you use to balance work with other things (school, uni, life in general etc)?

Do you have any resume/cover letter tips?

What is something you are looking forward to in the future? // Do you have any career related goals for the future?

@Ben-RO love that image!

I have this thought constantly. I think the thoughts can fade away a little bit once you have been at a job for a while and become confident in it but it is pretty difficult early on.

Reminding yourself that others feel the same can help - although sometimes it really does seem like others really do have it together! 😛
