Shit I didn't know this was on!
What are some qualities or attributes that make someone a ‘good’ friend?
- Trust
- Respect
- Honesty
- Loyalty/Faithfulness
- Keep their word
- Stick up and be there for you
- Know their boundaries

In answering this question i am kind of thinking of our responses to the last question. I guess i think that a "good" friend is someone who you have stronger connections with and who you share more of your life and who you are. Maybe they are there for you in tougher times and not just for more superficial stuff.
However, it makes me wonder if its possible to have a "good" friend who is just there for hanging out who doesn't talk about tougher stuff with you. Basically for me the thing i am thinking about right now is; can you have a "good" friend who might not ask RUOK? Or is that a dealbreaker? I think it might be for me.

Hey @Bay52VU - welcome! I don't think that's a weird perspective when it comes to friends at all. I find that I can be the same sometimes - enjoying each others' company is a great reason to call someone a friend.

A friend to me is someone who shares something similar to me (e.g., studying the same subject) and who I am comfortable sharing information with (e.g., giving advice, talking about my personal life),A friendship is a more stronger and welcoming connection than an acquaintance, I feel.

What friend means to me is that I have a friendship with someone. I use the term loosely, and think of a low level of friendship when most people use it so it doesn't mean much to me but I know and I feel loved and happy when it's a closer level of friendship.- Mark as New

Different levels for close friends, really close, general friends. Ones that you trust to confide in or not. The levels are all friendship, only different levels or stages- Mark as New

@Ben-RO I'm the same with some of my Facebook "friends"... Some of them I went to primary school with and haven't spoken to in years.
@j95 hopefully it picks up soon! Otherwise like @Ben-RO said, definitely still up for a chat!
@N1ghtW1ng welcome!! Great to hear you remembered GR tonight! I like your point about trust - I agree that it's definitely an important part of friendships, especially close friendships!

Lucky me, remembering the GR all on my own 😛 I am on my phone though, so sorry for typos or anything. 🙂Friendship is having a connection with someone, trusting someone on different levels, depending on the friendship. Friends are someone who you share that friendship with but also people who you might only be aquantiances with, but a little more.

I like this idea of levels in friendship. Is it okay for us to have different levels of connections with different people?

What does friendship mean to you? What does it mean to you when you call someone (or they call you) a friend?
To me friendship is about having supportive people around you that you can be yourself with and have fun with, and make amazing memories with. Friendship is also about supporting friends through tough times, whatever they may be.
It means a lot to me when someone calls me a friend! It’s a good feeling because I know that they trust me and want to spend time with me. Knowing that you have people in your life who have a similar perspective to you can be a very powerful thing.

Hi everyone! Welcome to this week’s Getting Real session where we will be talking about how we can go about making and keeping friends! Looking forward to hearing about everyone’s opinions and perspectives.
Just a quick reminder that RO isn’t a crisis service, so if you feel distressed, overwhelmed or needing to talk to someone during tonight’s conversation, please do not hesitate to contact Lifeline on 13 11 14, or KHL on their chat service (or 1800 55 1800).
Make sure to check out our Community Guidelines throughout the duration of tonight’s GR.
So, let’s get started!

I'm part way through cooking dinner, so I dunno how long I'll stay but I'll have a crack at the first question 😛
What does friendship mean to you? What does it mean to you when you call someone (or they call you) a friend?
I'm really weird when it comes to friends... So to me, friendship is just about getting along with someone and enjoying time with them. There's different levels of friendship, but when I call someone a friend it just means I have a good time when I'm with them and know a bit about them.

Welcome @Bay52VU! Not slow cooking tonight?
I like your definition too! It's interesting because i think a lot of the time in these chats we have pretty similar answers, but this time around we've got slightly different ones. @N1ghtW1ng and I are all about having different levels, @j95 values a strong connection and @Bay52VU is cool with someone who they can hang out with and who they know a bit about.

Haha @Ben-RO no slow cooking yet - I'll need to go to the shops again in the next couple of days to get appropriate ingredients! I'm thinking I'll start with slow cooker ribs, cause they sound awesome but slightly challenging 🙂

Being respectful and accountable for promises/plans, being straightforward, willing to share their experiences/thoughts and willing to listen to other people's too
@Ben-RO yeah I somewhat agree on the "good friend" being someone to swap genuine RUOK's with. This is honestly where I really get stuck - there's literally been 1 person ever who I've ever been on that level with. I don't know how to reach that zone. So my good friends are somewhat below that. People that I've shared casual challenges and annoyances with, but not someone I'd be comfortable talking to about something I wasn't 90% on top of.

well I do agree with everyone else, I have different levels of friendship with different people, some I can talk to about the hard stuff, others I talk to once a week at sporting commitments ect
