[CHAT]: Moving house!

originally posted on 06-09-2017 11:25 AM

Most of us will move more than 10 times in our lives, and because more people are renting rather than buying these days that number is going up! I'm hoping my next home is just like Howl's moving castle; it'd make moving so much easier!

Unfortunately I'm not a wizard, so it's a little more like this:

On Monday the 11th of September I'll be moving out of my current place and into a new one. So while I'm off doing that we are having a discussion about moving!

We'll talk about things like:

  • How to manage the huge stress of a move and mental health stuff caused by that
  • What to look for in a new place
  • Who can help if your tenancy goes pear-shaped
  • Tips and tricks for getting your move done as quickly as possible

So pop in and say hello oMonday the 11th of September from 7:30pm AEST to share your experiences of moving and learn a trick or two to make the whole thing easier.

Often when we move houses, we move schools too (unless you're not in school anymore :P) so without further ado.... the next question! 😄

Do you have any tips or stories to share about changing schools?

Some tips for changing schools are to be open and friendly wherever possible, and to say yes to as much as you can e.g. extra curricular activities, social activities, even when doing that is scary (because I know it can be really scary for me!) because the connections you make and the experiences you can have are invaluable!

Have you moved out of home before? What were some positives and negatives of living by yourself/with a roommate?

Yes. Positives would be freedom from your parents,  not always being told off, and you can anything you want. Moving to a location that is convenient for you.

Negatives- money drains so much compared to living at home Smiley Sad. Living with roommates that are lazy can be so annoying and frustratingSmiley Frustrated

@honky freedom is a wonderful thing! Although I agree, the money drain is less than ideal 😛

Yeah I have, my situation is kind of more complex than most though.

    Pos:
on your own you can drink out of the bottle
    neg:
you have to pay everything yourself and everything is your fault, broken window? yep thats on you

    with others:

    Pos:
    share the costs
    can be pretty fun
have stupid like housemate things like meme of the week
someone to take drunk you's shoes off before you go to sleep
usually someone around so its not too lonely

    Neg:
    some housemates can be annoying/rude/smelly/messy
some housemates dont pay rent and avoid it like the plague
we didn't have a kitchen light for so long because nobody would buy the globe because it was everyone else problem

Those are some awesome positives @j95! 🙂 I particularly like drinking out of the bottle 😉

I still live with my parents, so I don't have any experience with this. Although a negative for me would be having to organise dinner and lunch and even breakfast 😛 A positive would be... um... being as jumpy and excitable around the house without anyone around 🙂 (I do a lot of random skips and bumps :P)

    @j95 nice 🙂

@Bee yeah, moving interstate isn't very fun. Especially when you leave your friends behind! (The first time I moved was interstate :P) I don't remember moving things though, so that wasn't so bad! Although I do remember that my dad drove up with the car while mum and my siblings took a plane 😛

    2. Do you think that moving to another place is a positive or a negative thing? Can it be both?
It can be both. I mentioned a lot of negatives in my previous post, but it can also be exciting, a way to start over etc

Have you ever moved houses or schools before? What was it like?

Yes and yes. I was nine or ten, so it was tough to leave all my friends and my house and my town behind, but it wasn't too bad and I got used to it pretty fast.

That's alright @honky, I'm glad you could join us! 🙂 That's a lot of moving! I completely understand what you mean by making friends who have their friend circles 😛

@redhead thanks for joining us tonight 🙂 All the expenses can be so hard to handle too, I wish money trees were a real thing! It can be easy to get lost in a new area too.

    Welcome back!
