Heya everyone!

What are some things to help us notice  or be mindful of our reaction to a situation and how old experiences are influencing it?

This is actually an interesting question considering I used to always think of how past experiences influenced the way I reacted to things. I was always making the connections but then I was told that it was doing me more harm than good. As I was always in my head and not really focussing on the here and now. Me thinking of the connections wasn't helping me deal with the problem itself.

But I guess I am coming from a trauma related point of view rather than, say, you embarrassed yourself somewhere and now you are too anxious to ever go back to that place again.

My entire life can be described in one sentence: It didn't go as planned and that's okay. ツ

  • Thinking about events in the past
  • Assuming
  • Being worried when you don't know the outcome
  • Having an opportunity you think would be great but still having doubt and hesitation around it

@redhead do you reckon it can be a bit of a snowball effect?

@redhead @Alison5 it seems like you two are noticing that it is a bit of a cycle. What are some things you do to help jump out of the spiral?

What are some ways memories of bad experiences or regrets get in the way of new, positive experiences for you?

I think that nothing ever good is gonna happen because bad things keep happening. I hear voices that remind me of every failure I've done so I give up trying

There's a couple of ways for me. The obvious one is something that I am doing reminds me of something sad or tough that happened in the past.

There's a not so obvious way though and that is that over time i have realised that sometimes the way I see or think about things is shapped by not so good things that have happened. So I might assume something bad is going to happen when actually something pretty awesome might happen.

And to get this show on the road, here's the first discussion question!

What are some ways memories of bad experiences or regrets get in the way of new, positive experiences for you?

  • Fear of it happening again
  • Take unnecessary preventative measures to prevent it
  • Assuming it's going to happen the same way
  • Too scared to have another go

like talking to new people and stuff, I wish it was easier for me but I always go into those things with a lot of caution, or I just don't do it at all
