[CHAT]: Exam busters!

It's that time of semester again, where you find yourself drinking a bucketload of coffee at 3am to cram out those last few assignments. Then comes the momentary sigh of relief, before you realise you've still got a million exams coming up too...

And once all that's said and done, you might find yourself feeling a little like this:

Hey everyone!!

I think the possibility of failing makes me stressed out, the unknown of the questions and not knowing if I have prepared in the correct way. Especially when it came down to the HSC, the unknown was by far the biggest stress causer.

I think that in some ways it's a bit of a pride thing - like, 'Look how great I am at quadratics!' or whatever, especially since in school it's kind of a competition.

I also think that it's just that your really want to do well, especially if you're worked hard to prepare for it.

Holy cows @Ben-RO, more than a hundred??? Please tell me you're exaggerating. 😛

What is it about exams that make us so stressed?
The intense and very specific "importance" of exams is what stresses me out. That and how teachers expect us to REMEMBER everything!!!!

Lol @roseisnotaplant, I reckon they should stick with telling us what won't be in the exam rather than what will Smiley Happy

Cramming just does not work for me at all. Having said that, I've resorted to it once or twice, and don't intend to do so again. I'm definitely more of a long term study type person. For me, it helps me to feel like I'm taking some sort of action as early as I can before the exam.

Also, apologies that I haven't been very active on her this evening. I've been trying to finish a submission for a short story competition that's due in a few days...

Next Question...

What does it feel like to be stressed about exams, when do you start getting stressed?

What does it feel like to be stressed about exams, when do you start getting stressed?

Hahaha, that gif is me near exam time.

For me stress goes up and down. Basically as soon as i know the exam exists, there's the poitential for stress. If i'm not thinking about it, i'm not stressed, if i'm thinking about it, i'll probably experience a little stress (or a lot). Sometimes it's good stress... the kind of stress where you think "this is going to be hard, but i;ve got this" but it might also be not so good stress, where it goes from feeling challenging but doable, to feeling a bit overwhelmed. It took me a while to figure out what to do when that kind of stress arrives.

My stress for exams is just... well actually I can't say because I can never remember anything 😛
Come back to me this weekend and then I'll tell you (I have an exam on Monday)

My stress, well as stressed as I get, it's not very obvious to me. And I'd imagine it'd be the same with exams. It's more a refusal or a elongated "brain fart" that's really just me going "nope nope nope" on repeat. Which happens whenever I try to studying, at the exam or the night and morning before. Most likely. Like I said, I really don't remember 😛 (do you not remember things very well when you are stressed? Or I just have a terrible memory)

What does it feel like to be stressed about exams, when do you start getting stressed?

Stressing about exam generally feels like this overwhelming sense of dread and worry.. and then a sense of calm. Only because in my years of studying and especially getting through my year 12 exams unscathed, I just repeat to myself that I can only do my best and that is all that matters. I do start to get stressed about 24hrs before the exam, but then around 12 hours to go I just feel calm.

On to the next Q....

Is it okay to be stressed about exams? Why/why not?

I think it is okay to be stressed about exams. But if the stress becomes too much it's important to talk to someone like your teacher or other relevant person.

Or friends as well @SmileMonkey! Always nice to share that feeling with others who feel and/or are experiencing the same thing. At least then you know you're in it together Smiley Happy

Ditto Ben and RevzZ, a bit of stress can act as a motivator but anymore or less can be detrimental to exam results.

Do you reckon that if we get to the point that there's too much stress that we can wind it back down to a helpful level? @FootyFan26

I reckon it's possible with the help of a lot of positive self-talk and self-care.

What are some ways you deal with exam stress?

Heehee @roseisnotaplant, it essentially feels like that, especially with people walking to exams with blank expressions!

Is it okay to be stressed about exams? Why/why not?

Well, you know what they say. A little bit of stress helps motivate us to actually do things. It also gives you a gentle reminder to go eat some chocolate!

Welcome back!
