[CHAT] We are family

They say blood is thicker than water, and that you cant choose your family. This week we’re getting together to talk about the uniqueness of families in this day and age and to share your stories good, bad or embarrassing about your family. With school and uni holidays just beginning, perhaps you’re already a little overwhelmed by the family..

Love them or hate them, we all have family. They can drive us crazy on those days when we want to sleep in, but dad wants to mow the lawn. But they can also be the ones that are around every single day no matter what, to help you and support you. The age old idea of a nuclear family with a mum, dad and two kids is out the door. These days we have foster children, adopted children; we have family friends that live with us and friends who have turned into family. So what we want to talk about on Monday is how unique and different your family is and why it’s so important to value them- no matter how much they drive you crazy.

This Monday come join myself and @SJG  to talk about your family and what makes them unique. Learn tips on how to deal with tricky situations or ways to re-spark that lost family spirit.

What types of things do you and your family do together?

It's hard at the moment, because I'm at college (which is a good 8 hours away from home), but I still game online with my bro and skype my parents regually and we show off what we had done that week. For example, my mum was showing me the dining they renovated themselves and I showed her the costumes I had sewn for the college musical. When I'm actually at home, we care for the animals together and camp and yeah. It's rad.

What we do together as a family greatly depends on where we are. If at the family farm it's often cattle work, feeding, mustering etc. me and my sisters go for walks. Also cooking and baking always happen. When we get together we like to pull out the guitar and have a sing along too. When its the sister and mum up visiting we go shopping and out to lunch 🙂

Me and day always play cards when he comes over. My family grew up playing cards and it's something that's stuck.

Hi all. My family is pretty simple though not so nuclear. In our house growing up there was mum dad and 3 daughters; I'm the middle child. My grandparents also lived on out farm so they had a lot to do with my upbringing too. My family is so special to me, especially because it is so rare to get us all together at once now two of us are out of home. We're spread across three states.

I reckon this is a good time to ask the next question;

What types of things do you and your family do together?

My family don't do much together anymore, we kinda top the charts of dysfunctional.. 😕 Although my mum and I do some crafts together, and I do enjoy spending some time with my overactive younger brother, but apart from that, we keep to ourselves, which kinda sucks because I miss the old days!

When I was much younger I remember playing cricket on the road, having water fights, walks to the park ect with my older siblings, I loved it (especially because I couldn't do those things myself!)

We tend to have meals together and support the rugrats by all watching them play their saturday morning sport. We also tend to skype a lot. We also go fishing together and spend the day at the dam, which I guess is the coastal equivalence of the beach.

What types of things do you and your family do together?
Well... when my Nana plans things, often without considering others, so there are those family dinners/lunches/brunches/whatever. Sometimes on birthdays and christmas family comes together. That and funerals. We don't do much at all. We don't even eat together anymore. 😞 That probably has something to do with the fact that I am almost 17, my brother is glued to his computer screen and my sister moved out but is actually over here right now... huh. Yeah...

Given these differences what makes your family special to you?

Like I said before, I have a great relationship with my bro, he is one of my best friends. Same with my mum and dad, we get along really well. I listen to stories around college about other peoples' fam-bams, and I really consider myself lucky. Other than that, my family is really DIY loving, they've taught me how to sew, build, paint, play music. We are a family of many talents 😛 (also, my whole family are big Batman fans, yeeeaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh buddy!!!!)

I really treasure my dad. He has a chronic illness, but still makes time for me.
I hate my brother.....
Also the rest of my family is on the other side of the world, so it's cool when I get to talk to them.
