Everyone is creative, right?

To me being creative is being artistic, musical; it is seeing things in an innovative and original way. By that definition I am not creative, in fact I was once asked not to display my year eight art because my painting was ‘too hard to understand’. Just so you know we had to draw something that made us happy- I painted a canvas blue and said ‘water’ made me happy, I thought A+ for effort they thought not!

Anyway, high school grudges aside people use the word creative in relation to me in… creative ways, such as “what a creative car park!” or “that’s a creative way of cooking pasta”. Most of the time I think they might be making fun of my obscure way of getting things done, but may I remind you they are the ones who used the word “creative” not me. I am jealous of anyone who can draw more than a lop sided love heart and a daisy flower. I wish when I got bored I could just start drawing, or playing an instrument…

But can creativity be more than just the ability to paint or play an instrument? I believe some people express creativity through their energy or in the way they think and behave, and by that definition maybe we can all be creative.

I know firsthand that @SJG is creative in the most obvious sense; she has mentioned it on the forums before and I have seen her work, in fact I own a piece. So on Monday join myself and @SJG to see how one very uncreative person (myself) and one very creative person @SJG, navigate the world of creativity.

Whether you can draw, cook, organise well, tell jokes, write well, or even park your car well, Join us on Monday at 8pm.

Man tonight has been great guys !!!!

Here is the summary ....

How would you define a creative person? What sorts of things do they do?

-       Being arty

-       Musical

-       Studying design, performing arts, music

-       Interested and expresses in creative avenues

-       Problem solving

-       Seeing beauty and being mindful

-       Doing things differently to others

-       Think outside the square

-       Awesome imagination

-       Art in all forms is mearly an expression of a person's thoughts/feelings and should be embraced for the courage needed to communicate this

-       Legos

Do you consider yourself creative or not-creative?? What are the things that have happened to make you think that?

Creative peeps-

-       Wild imagination

-       Problem solving

-       Growing up it has been important

-       Different perspective

-       Baking

-       Poetry

-       Coding computers

-

Non creative peeps

-       Comparing yourself to REALLY creative people

Do you think that there might be conventional ways to be creative and then there might be more obscure ways? What's an example of each? (what about instagram, journalling or fashion - where do these things fit? Are they creative?)

-       Yes and no

-       Creativeness is conventional in its own right

-       Creativeness is good for the brain,

-       It is an outlet of emotion

-       Conventional methods = normal associations, obvious

-       Obscure = logical ways of being creative

What is the most creative thing you have ever done? Or regularly ?

-       Ice cream flavours

-       Train track designs

-       Exploring everyday

-       Illustrations

Have you heard about art and music therapy? How might art or music therapy help in a tough time?

-       Yes people have heard of it and used it

-       Wanting to include in their career with degenerative disorders (parkinsons, alzheimers etc) or for kids with developmental disorders!

-       They have a calming effect that draws people in better than being talked to or talking to someone.

-       Helps people cope better by using images

-       Distract a person from what is going on in their life, or to help them express how they are feeling.

If you are feeling uninspired, blocked or in a creative rut, what's one thing you could do to try and bring some creativity back into your life? (Check out what this RO.com user did!!) Even in the most creative ways?

-       Learn to harness it more

-       Try something new

-       Challenge yourself

-       Step outside your comfort zone

-       Get inspired from something already out there

-       Splat art = sounds super fun

-       Go outside and take photos

-       Read

-       Call nan

Can you teach an old dog new tricks, can someone learn to be creative? If so how? “Teach me your ways”

-       Some say “I don't think that someone can learn to be creative. I just think that people have forgotten how to be creative”

-       Some say “Absolutely yes”

What is one new thing you learnt during this session?

-       That I am creative

-       Showing other people how to harness their own creativeness

Can you teach an old dog new tricks, can someone learn to be creative? If so how, or what is a good way to start ? “Teach me your ways” -@eloiserose

Absolutely Yes! I taught my nan how to scrapbook and how to decorate cupcakes. It was also a huge bonding exercise.

Start with most people's favourite thing ever: FOOD!

Make cupcake art, make a cake and decorate it; make a three course meal and present it restuarant style.

With all the ideas being thrown around, I just see it as helping someone to tap into their creativeness, you are not actually teaching them how to be creative, just showing them another way to show their creativeness. Which may cause a massive chain of events where they begin to be more creative in other aspects of life.

We're built with the abilty to keep learning as humans.  SO YEAH!!  Where to start.  Get outside...take some photos of your adventures, write about them, draw flowers and leaves as you come across them on your adventures.

On that note...I'm going to have to head off too.  😞  It's been fun, but I need to get to bed in a minute.  Thanks to all of you.  🙂
