Movies that shine a light on mental illness and health..

Hey guys!

I went and saw this movie last night and I just really felt the need to share it with everyone on here for some reason. I also posted it on my FB cause it just really hit a cord with me and idk.. I can't quite put it into words, but I just feel like it's a movie about a mental illness that everyone should see.

It then got me thinking.. and the mods or whoever can delete this if something similar already exists? But I was thinking it might be nice to share trailers to some movies we've seen that normalise or bring awareness to mental illness and health? Idk. It might just be me and me being weird, but something about these sort of movies just really get me. I can't put it into words. But if anyone has some similar movie recommendations I'd love to hear them!

POSSIBLE TW** The movie is about a young guy with schizophrenia so please just be aware as it may be close to home for some, and it also raises some general mental health issues and concerns so also be aware of that. I thought it was amazing but also found it hit home a bit so please don't watch it if you're not feeling like you're in a good place ❤

Hey @MB95, this is a great idea for a thread! Sometimes it can be really nice to relate to some things that you watch, or even become open to the ideas of things that you watch. It is really lovely to hear of the impact this movie has had on you, and even your perception towards mental illness, so I am curious to watch it now myself! Thank you for the recommendation! Smiley Happy

Cool thread @MB95 . Funnily enough one of my uni assignments for a psychology class was to watch movies that portray mental illness and write a report on how the characters show symptoms for the disorders and if it's accurate or not.

One movie we watched was Lars and the real girl. This movie had Ryan Gossling in it and he played a character with delusional disorder.

The other movie we watched was Mississippi Grind, a casino style movie where the main character appeared to have gambling disorder.

Both movies were ok, I think I may have enjoyed them more if I didn't have to study them haha.

Thanks for the recommendations guys, I'm going to pop them on my list for the holiday season!

@Kaylee-RO you really should watch it - idk, something about it just really got me. I'd be interested to hear from someone who actually has schizophrenia what they think of it. But I really enjoyed it and felt it was a true portrayal but not entirely sure as I don't know anyone with schizophrenia.

Speaking of having to watch movies for an assignment @mol1912 I had a choice of a few different health issues and movies recently and chose mental health of course. Anyway, I watched Infinitely Polar Bear which was about a family who had a father with manic depression. I also thought it was a great movie so also worth a watch for anyone interested.

I always found Mary and Max a moving story about friendship and accepting who you are. It's got some triggering themes in it but I think it really highlights that neurodiversity is okay and life is hard but you can find happiness and humour anywhere

Wow I think I've got my holiday sorted with all these suggestions! I love To the Bone, it's a beautiful movie about battling anorexia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=705yRfs6Dbs

Or if anyone's interested in PTSD and vicarious trauma, Oranges and Sunshine is also a great one. It mentions child abuse and sexual assault though, so it's probably a good idea to consider that before you watch it Smiley Happy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCeGcUGcR44

I would recommend the end of this fxxxing world although it is a TV series. It is about two kids who have some mental issues and how they help and support each other 😄

@mol1912  We had to do a similar task as homework in one of my classes! I watched A Beautiful Mind which was based on the life of John Nash. I don't think it was completely accurate in its portrayal of him and schizophrenia but it was an interesting movie with good actors.
