a regular routine and good sleep hygeine can help your overall mood and mental health, like exhibit A over here who used to never sleep and be so grumpy all the time and go work so sleepy that when I was working as an apprentice electrician I once nearly electrocuted myself oops 😛 I was told to go home that day

8. How can you remind yourself to maintain good sleep hygiene?
Write down what time you plan to go to sleep and STICK TO IT!
Maybe, keep a list of things you would like to do to improve your sleep hygiene somewhere visible and try building a new habit,

How can you remind yourself to maintain good sleep hygiene?
For me I remind myself how much of a better day I will have if I go to bed on time and get up immediately. It helpd motivate me to keep up my routine before bed.

Thanks everyone for joining in. If you weren’t able to make it, not to worry, as here is a short summary of what we spoke about.
A few of us had a good night sleep and some of us didn’t. We learnt that when it comes to sleep, it is quality over quantity.
We all agreed that sleep hygiene is all about what we do to get a good night’s sleep which usually involves a set routine.
When discussing barriers to a good night sleep, we came up with:
- Brain stimulation (noise, light, thoughts, movements around you)
- Use of electronic devices in bed
- Medical conditions
- Caffeine in the evenings
- Using your bed for things other than sleep or sex
It was suggested that when you are having a sleepless night, that you shouldn’t stay in bed if you can’t sleep and should do something that doesn’t stimulate you. Some even suggested trying some apps that aim to create a relaxing environment such as rainymood and relaxing melodies.
Some bad habits that form around sleep hygiene include the use of electronics, taking short sleeps instead of naps. Having caffeine too close to bed time, eating late, staying up late. Thinking too much or leaving your phone too close to your bed.
Having a set routine and bedtime was agreed on by everyone as a strategy to use in terms of eliminating these bad habits. As well as having your alarm on the other side of the room.
Good sleep hygiene tends to lean towards being less grumpy, be more mentally aware and more energy in general.
One way in which we can remind ourselves to practice good sleep hygiene is to remember just how great we feel when we have a great night sleep as opposed to having a bad one.
Once again, thanks everyone.
Hope this discussion leads to better sleep.
Goodnight

A night time alarm! An hour before bed time, set an alarm that reminds you to do all the things that help you hit the hay perfectly.

Basically keeping up a regular routine, so get yourself into the 'groove' of sleep. Removing technological distractions from your head such as your phone or computer. Having near-darkness or total darkness (depending on what you feel like) but no phone screen kind of light because those are shit for your eyes in the dark.My mum always says that your phone should be at least a metre from your head.

I reckon it says a lot about our society that we have designed so many different types of alarms to get us out of bed! 😛- Mark as New

What is the impact of good sleep hygiene?
For me I am much more productive the next day, able to focus on the task at hand and less irritable. I also find it regulates my digestive system and hunger levels too.

@Ben-RO I had problems sleeping well at the beginning of the year so I did some research and followed some ideas.
What is the impact of good sleep hygiene?
Definitely less grumpy.
And feeling more alive. Like I find that if I wake up at 10am or later, I may have enough hours of sleep but I just don't feel like doing anything.
Also less need for longer naps.

Oh that can be so true @ryvb3!!! If I sleep in I find it much harder to get going and get things done that day.Be up earlier seems like I have more hours in the day, even though I am probably awake for just as many as if Id slept in.
I find it really rewarding watching the sunrise 🙂

7. What is the impact of good sleep hygiene?
I'll let you know when I finally do have good sleep hygiene.
I guess it means being well rested and finding it easy to fall asleep, as well as waking up at the same time everyday. To be honest, I will probably never experience this as I have never been one for routine.

Ive heard of these alarms which are a bit like a grenade. They are meant to be for parents. They pull the pin out and chuck it in the childs room. It starts blaring and will only shut off once the pin is put back in, which the parent holds on to.Seems kinda cruel!
I like your approach much more @ryvb3!
