[CHAT] Healthy Eating Aug 13

Healthy eating is relevant to all of us and not only does it effect our physical health, but our mental health too. Our diets are made up of a variety of nutrients, so knowing what is healthy and what isn't can be pretty hard to navigate. But if we have the knowledge, we have the power! The power to make healthy choices that is Smiley Winkgiphy

Join us on Monday the 13th of August at 7:30 PM AEST to have a chat about what healthy eating is and how we can make healthy choices for ourselves. If you're interested in doing some research beforehand check out the information here! This fact sheet outlines the macro nutrients in food, and how we use them in our bodies.

i challenge for me is not snacking when im bored bc that’s a real struggle. another challenge is probably maintaining a steady food intake because i usually eat nothing or too much.

2. What are the biggest barriers or challenges of eating healthy for you?

Probably the fact that most unhealthy foods taste so good to give up 😂

What are the biggest barriers or challenges of eating healthy for you?

Keeping myself full throughout the day (by eating fibrous, protein rich foods) so I'm less likely to crave junk. Also resisting the urge to go out and buy something when someone mentions a junk food, I see an advertisement etc. 😛 Also $1 frozen drinks at all the fast food places will be the death of me hahaa why does it have to be so CHEAP 😛

2. What are the biggest barriers or challenges of eating healthy for you?

I'm a very very very fussy eater, and am much more comfortable sticking with foods I'm familiar with. Most of these aren't the healthiest.
Compounding on to this, is that I don't want to spend the money on healthy food. I don't want to spend time and money on something that I feel I'm likely not to like. It just feels like a waste that isn't worth it.

2. What are the biggest barriers or challenges of eating healthy for you?

Making sure I have the right ingredients in bulk already at home is really important for me - I need to be able to just come home after a long day and have everything there for me. Feeling unmotivated is also a barrier sometimes and usually means I will just make a homemade pizza (which can definitely be healthy but not the best if I put heaps of cheese on it haha). Drinking alcohol and being in social environments is another challenge because it makes me want to eat really unhealthy food - especially if others are!

@May_that's a great point about social situations. No party has healthy food. And if I'm just catching up with friends or even just out with my boyf or something, it's so much more tempting and easier to support each other in getting dessert and soft drink and lollies.

@Birdeye I have the same issue with my partner - we definitely encourage each other to eat bad food it's not great! I find it so hard to say no in those situations 😛

3. Is healthy eating boring?

Nooope! Over time I've learnt a lot about cooking and flavours and what I like. I used to think I hated so many ingredients (helloo mushrooms) but now that I cook a lot I have discovered how to make meals in a way that works really well for me. I have gradually added more and more ingredients into the repertoire of things I really like and know how to use in a meal. I love making huge veggie curries, rice dishes and pasta sauces that are really flavoursome 😄

Again @May_ I feel you! I used to dislike SO many things but now I am a bit less fussy and better at cooking so I have opened up a bit 🙂

That's so true! and if you chop it up so small then you can barely taste it 🙂 @May_

@missep @May_ I did the "chop it up into miniscule pieces" strategy with my dinner tonight 😛 I *hate* the texture of eggplant but if I dice it finely enough then I don't even notice it 🙂

@May_ it's so slimy and weird isn't it? :S I had some spiced quinoa and then tossed through a bunch of steamed veggies - eggplant, pumpkin, zucchini, capsicum 🙂

@scared01's mention of zucchini pasta made me think of zucchini fries. I've been super hesitant about non-potato fries, but the zucchini was really nice! Has anyone found they like other replacements like that?

What are your favourite go-to healthy meals?

Asian stir fries, curries, salads. However, my go-to recipe when I want to make a healthy treat is this fudgy brownies recipe by Kayla Itsines (recipe link here).

@missep now I'm craving dumplings! 😛

I'm actually on a massive seaweed bender at the moment (no idea why hahaha)... I need to learn how to make my own sushi instead of having to eat out

@May_ I've noticed that when we buy something together, like say a block of chocolate, I feel like I have to have as much as he's having or have a good amount. So we end up finishing up the block of chocolate because we both wanted to eat as much of it as we could together.
Very much an unwise move on my part.
