[CHAT] Healthy Eating Aug 13

Healthy eating is relevant to all of us and not only does it effect our physical health, but our mental health too. Our diets are made up of a variety of nutrients, so knowing what is healthy and what isn't can be pretty hard to navigate. But if we have the knowledge, we have the power! The power to make healthy choices that is Smiley Winkgiphy

Join us on Monday the 13th of August at 7:30 PM AEST to have a chat about what healthy eating is and how we can make healthy choices for ourselves. If you're interested in doing some research beforehand check out the information here! This fact sheet outlines the macro nutrients in food, and how we use them in our bodies.

@Birdeye yeeees! I am exactly the same even though I am a foot shorter than him and do significantly less exercise. I find dividing it up beforehand can help with this so you don't feel pressure to eat faster than you would like to 😛

Definitely would work for that! Because wholemeal/wholegrain pasta is better for you apparently 🙂

actually speaking of pasta, my mum tried the zuhccini pasta too both fresh and the packet one (its all green coloured) the fresh i wasnt a fan but the packet one was ok, you couldnt really taste the difference between that and the white pasta. jsut thought id meantion it incase others like that sort of thing too 🙂

Oooh I've tried zucchini pasta also - I agree @scared01, I couldn't taste the difference between that and normal pasta as well! Plus it's a nice bonus that it's a healthier alternative 🙂

@May_ @Birdeye YES! Why must all party food be junk?! Don't get me wrong, I love junk food, but having a sandwich with my chips or soft drink keeps my gut happy so I can actually enjoy the event 😛

Is healthy eating boring?

It can sometimes be boring! If I am rushed or tired then trying to make a healthy meal can be a huuuuuge pain. However, I actually really enjoy cooking so when I have time to actually plan a meal out then I find it fun 🙂 I enjoy tweaking recipes to include more veggies/ingredients that I like. I often cook big batches of things too so when I am in a lazy mood I can just heat it up.

@MissX making meals in bulk is an awesome strategy! (I also find it helpful :))

Anyone here a Reddit user? Shout out to /r/MealPrepSunday which is awesome for this sort of stuff 😄

I was at a party on Saturday, and they had spinach and ricotta sausage-esque rolls. And I feel like that might be the healthiest party food I've ever eaten.

Though really, I hadn't eaten that badly for the last week and haven't snacked for quite a while so was pretty happy with being able to indulge throughout the party. When it's not special though, it's really unhelpful.

@May_ that's a really good point about alcohol! I feel the same way; I always want to eat foods high in salt and fat when I have been drinking.

2. What are the biggest barriers or challenges of eating healthy for you?

I think recognising my naughty habits and making sure I plan ahead of time. If I don't plan ahead of time then sometimes I don't eat as healthy as I want to.

What do you think healthy eating is? Do you think eating the odd snack snack (chips, ice cream) is still considered healthy eating?

i think healthy eating is eating a well balanced diet with lots of fresh fruit and vegies! hmm yes i do think the occassional snack is still considered healthy eating because its not a daily snack

Good question @lokifish!
I think healthy eating is having a balanced diet, trying to have lots of fruit and vegetables and trying to cook at home so you know what you're putting inside.
Restaurants tend to put a lot of salt or msg in their food.
I think having the occasional treat is completely fine and human! It's hard to be 100% all the time and it's important to enjoy your life 🙂

For me healthy eating is making sure I eat lots of veggies, legumes and fruit and making sure I am getting the nutrients I need. I think it's ok and pretty much unavoidable to eat junk food sometimes 🙂

heathy eating is to help maintain your health and being able to function for the day. healthy eating is to give the right nutrients to give yourself the correct energy. i think if you eat something unhealthy rarely then it won’t effect your health but if you eat it constantly than you’re not receiving the right nutrition.

True @litgym I definitely notice how it effects my body and energy if I'm not eating well 🙂

@missep definitely agree with your point about cooking at home - restaurant food tastes really good for a reason... 😛

I may or may not be about to get some more chocolate as I type this 😛 To me healthy eating is about giving your body what it needs to function optimally. I figure that the brain is part of the body, and therefore if we're craving something then it's okay to indulge a little (provided you've eaten all your veggies first! :P)

Hello everyone!

What do you think healthy eating is? Do you think eating the odd snack snack (chips, ice cream) is still considered healthy eating?

I think healthy eating is all about eating a balanced diet that is full of fruits, veggies, protein, healthy fats and carbohydrates. I eating the odd snack is still considered healthy, providing they are eaten in moderation :).

Also if I'm craving something naughty I'll have some tea first and it's usually the case that I'm just bored that's why I wanted to have a snack haha

Thank you @Birdeye! I have definitely learnt some strategies that help because I used to eat when I was bored/stressed or just because we had it in the house
