[CHAT] We are family

They say blood is thicker than water, and that you cant choose your family. This week we’re getting together to talk about the uniqueness of families in this day and age and to share your stories good, bad or embarrassing about your family. With school and uni holidays just beginning, perhaps you’re already a little overwhelmed by the family..

Love them or hate them, we all have family. They can drive us crazy on those days when we want to sleep in, but dad wants to mow the lawn. But they can also be the ones that are around every single day no matter what, to help you and support you. The age old idea of a nuclear family with a mum, dad and two kids is out the door. These days we have foster children, adopted children; we have family friends that live with us and friends who have turned into family. So what we want to talk about on Monday is how unique and different your family is and why it’s so important to value them- no matter how much they drive you crazy.

This Monday come join myself and @SJG  to talk about your family and what makes them unique. Learn tips on how to deal with tricky situations or ways to re-spark that lost family spirit.

How do you 'get along' with siblings in law/ partners/boyfriends/ girlfriends/ friends of your family when you don't really get along with them?

I really struggle to get along with my brother in law sometimes, i have almost nothing in common with him and we seem to argue everytime we are together, but for the sake of my sister i try really hard to get along with him, i try to talk about things that i know he is interested in (even if i find them incredibly boring) or suggest activities or places to eat that i know he will like to avoid uneccessary conflict

I just smile and wave. I'm really bad at this but it's not all bad considering that my sister's boyfriend hardly comes over here. I don't see my dad's side anymore and my mum's side drives me crazy. But I just smile, return hellos and pleasantries and try not to further engage conversation.

Do you have any friends that are more like family than friends?

At college, we live on floors and that floor is basically your family. I see these people as my family. Also, a lot of my friends are more like family. I'm pretty lucky to have such great relationships with so many people. #justrealised

@dreamcatcher samsies! Hahaha. I used to live on college. My corridor was my family and then I moved to self-catered and my unit became my family, but the following year, I got real creeps as housemates.

Do you have any weird, unusual or cool family traditions?

We still have Easter and Christmas the same as we did when we were kids (ie, the Easter Bunny and Santa still comes) even though we (my bro and I) are 18 and 21. HAHA! Love it!!!

Other than that, nothing too odd

Do you have any weird, unusual or cool family traditions?

Unfortunately no. My family was to dysfunctional to have traditions. Even growing up with christmas was tough with my parents fighting where I would spend it.

Where do I start?

Umm ... we all have different names that we call each other, like munciple and sock flusher. Every Christmas, we have a family breakfast where both sides are invited, but recently it has only been my mums side since all of dads side moved away.

But no, not really anything weird or unusual. Except what is acceptable dinner table conversations.

Oh, also, when I'm at home I like to watch Disney Princess movies with Dad. I'm not sure if he is just a big softie or just to lazy to change the movie, hahaha.

@SJG don't attack me virtually but I don't even remember lord of the rings. And I was forced to see the second hobbit movie (because my aunt bought all the tickets and didn't realise (or didn't care) that my mum and I were actually going to see Frozen instead...) and I wasted two and a bit hours nearly falling asleep... family right?

Oh My Gosh! @N1ghtW1ng and @SJG that reminds me of when my mum and her sisters decided to watch one of the lord of the rings at the cinema. My cousins, sisters and I ended up at the back of the cinema playing the whole time! I guess it was lucky that it was a really large cinema and was practically empty.
