[CHAT] We like to party

Moderator @FItzChivalry writes:

Partying is a word that gets most people excited at the first thought of it. The idea of partying is pretty awesome. Get a bunch of mates, music, a few drinks and dance the night away. I’ve spent many years doing just that, and I’ve had some awesome nights because of it, made a lot of friends and a lot of memories. But partying does have its dark side.

darth

I remember my first real house party, when we were all about 16 years old. I was the only one who really had an older brother, and he was “cool” enough to buy alcohol for the night. My best friend’s mum had even gone away for the weekend so we had a free house. The invites went out, and the party was gonna be awesome. It was like a scene out of one of those American college movies where they are running around the school throwing flyers at people. A few hours into the party it was clear that this definitely was going to be the best party ever. However things very quickly soured.

Unbeknownst to the organizers, one girl had brought herself a bottle of pretty hard liquor and decided it would be a great idea to polish it off herself. Next thing you know she’s in hospital, mums were called, tears were shed and it was definitely not the party to end all parties. That was our first taste of how quickly things could head south (the girl was fine in the end, but it was still a bit shock for us all).

partyon

So - partying can be awesome, and the majority of the time it is, but young people, alcohol and maybe even drugs is the perfect combination for problems. It happens from time to time. So how do we still have a good time without being too irresponsible about it?

Join us on Monday 17th Nov at 8pm AEST to discuss your party experiences and to talk about safety party tips.

What kind of things can make a great night out turn sour?

when one friend drinks too much or when everyone drinks too much and they start acting really badly

when an ex turns up !!

when someone loses something and then everyone spends the rest of the night looking for it

When someone needs medical help

@EloiseRose Oh man... that amount of nights that end with everybody with the torches on the smartphones searching for a phone or wallet... Such a buzzkill!

Have you ever felt pressured into drinking ? If so how did you deal with the situation? what would you have done differently

I never really felt pressured i guess but i always felt like i should have a drink in my hand because everyone else was costantly drinking throughout the night. Taking breaks from drinking and going for a boogie always helps cos who wants to dance with a drink in their hand? it's way too hard

yeh its hard - you get alot of flack for not drinking

I remember at school i was considered such a loser for not drinking. But i was so scared the police would arrest me - i have NO IDEA WHY! haha. i just couldnt drink until i turned 18

I started drinking quite a bit later than most, so I didn't get pressured in a straightforward way, but I was pressured to 'prove myself' in a way, to try and reach my limits. It was for a very short period of time, but I learned a lot from it

Those gigs are good fun - not just as an audience either, playing in them is funner!

I remember when I was like 16, I went to a party and everybody was drinking and I had nobody to buy it for me so a friend gave me his ID (he was also underage and had a fakie). Was quite proud of myself. Wasn't worth the trouble I got in from a lot of people though.

@Troy Because I wasn't supposed to be drinking so I did two things wrong - illegally bought alcohol and was told I wasn't allowed to drink haha

But to be honest if I hadnt of bought my own I would of had something someone else provided and who knows what it could of been

For me the biggest thing is troublemakers! Nothing ruins a night quicker than some drunken idiot trying to start a fight...

haha yep @FItzChivalry

I don't drive, so I've had to take friends home in taxis before and make sure they get home safe, then pay for another taxi to go back to the party!
