[CHAT] We like to party

Moderator @FItzChivalry writes:

Partying is a word that gets most people excited at the first thought of it. The idea of partying is pretty awesome. Get a bunch of mates, music, a few drinks and dance the night away. I’ve spent many years doing just that, and I’ve had some awesome nights because of it, made a lot of friends and a lot of memories. But partying does have its dark side.

darth

I remember my first real house party, when we were all about 16 years old. I was the only one who really had an older brother, and he was “cool” enough to buy alcohol for the night. My best friend’s mum had even gone away for the weekend so we had a free house. The invites went out, and the party was gonna be awesome. It was like a scene out of one of those American college movies where they are running around the school throwing flyers at people. A few hours into the party it was clear that this definitely was going to be the best party ever. However things very quickly soured.

Unbeknownst to the organizers, one girl had brought herself a bottle of pretty hard liquor and decided it would be a great idea to polish it off herself. Next thing you know she’s in hospital, mums were called, tears were shed and it was definitely not the party to end all parties. That was our first taste of how quickly things could head south (the girl was fine in the end, but it was still a bit shock for us all).

partyon

So - partying can be awesome, and the majority of the time it is, but young people, alcohol and maybe even drugs is the perfect combination for problems. It happens from time to time. So how do we still have a good time without being too irresponsible about it?

Join us on Monday 17th Nov at 8pm AEST to discuss your party experiences and to talk about safety party tips.

What kind of things can make a great night out turn sour?

at that same party that I used a fake id to buy drinks for, a girl showed up drunk and just about fell out of the taxi unconscious, it was a pretty tame party and nobody knew who this girl was. She just came in so drunk she was about to pass out, then passed out on the couch within about 30 seconds. it didnt ruin the party but still... it was a bit of a quiet one with no dramas until that happened

@j95 Ah the old fakie... those were the days... One thing I regret is borrowing my brothers ID when I was underage. If I had have waited until I was 18 (or even older) I definitely think I would have gained a lot more respect for alcohol earlier on in life.

I totally get that @EloiseRose!

Although my issue is with j-walking. I just CAN'T do it. Drinking underage? Fine with me. J-walking? NO WAY - THE POLICE WILL CATCH ME AND LOCK ME UP FOREVERRR

I totally agree with you @FItzChivalry on the friendship thing! If they are your true friends, they would understand if you don't want to be doing something, and would hopefully not be pressuring you to do something in the first place!

@EloiseRose Thanks!

Have you ever felt pressured into drinking ? If so how did you deal with the situation? what would you have done differently

I definitely used to feel pressured into drinking. I guess I still do from time to time, I have a certain circle of friends that are heavy drinkers and whenever I hang out with them it's very very hard to avoid drinking. I guess what's changed is that I'm more comfortable with myself and having the strength to say no. Most of the time if you are honest and upfront with people that you genuinely don't want to drink or have had enough then if they really are your mates they should understand, if not then they're probably not great mates to have anyway

Yep, I definitely did when I was younger, and smoke too. I gave in, I really didn't want to, but I didn't want to be ostracised either. I'm a much stronger person now, and would easily say no if I wanted to. I don't quite know what I would have done differently... Ideas anyone!? I remember one time I said I felt sick and shouldn't be drinking, that seemed to work!

Gigs are the BEST! Quite a few of my friends have played gigs at local pubs around Hobart, and I love going to watch and support them! 😄

What are the alternatives to going out or partying, especially if you’re a non-drinker or underage? How else can you have similar fun?

Same as @florenceforever for me, just partying without alcohol. Singstar would inevitably be involved, and the whole night would just be my friends and I being ridiculous and laughing ourselves silly

Haha yep @safari93!

LOTS of Singstar. Also prank calls and endless games of truth or dare

I went through a period where I was a self-designated driver, mostly because I couldn't afford the hefty price tags that come along with a big night out in the city. At the start it was pretty hard getting used to not drinking at a club or pub, but it didn't take long before I ended up being as comfortable as everyone else without the liquid persuasion. It was pretty awesome being able to go out all night and drive home, even be able to drive your friends home, and then not have to wake up with a huge hangover! I'm a bit of a muso as well so I spend a fair few saturday nights around a fire at a mates house with a few acoustic guitars and african drums, there are so many ways to enjoy yourself without having to get drunk!

I think just the same as a house party without the alcohol. That's what I used to do! Well, until I was 15... Up until then though I would have really fun sleepovers with my friends, we would eat crap loads, watch movies, listen to music REALLY loud and chat until early the next morning. THEN we would decide to go to bed at 4am. Naturally.

Alternative to going out and partying

-Now: Get coffee

-Younger: we use to get 4 xbox's and 4 tv's and system link halo with around 15 people playing the same game, in the same room. When your young its actually the coolest thing in the world

@Troy Yeah man I love late night coffee sesh's. Only a few places I know of that stay open past like 6pm though... :'( And what are you talking about I'll still occassionaly bust out the old nintendo 64 and crank out the mario kart or super smash brothers all night with some mates. I may have peter pan syndrome but it's still as fun as ever haha
