GR - Life After Year 12 Exams - Oct 22

Year 12 exams are upon us *internal screams*

Okay, it's okay. You got this!

motivational high school GIF

There is life after year 12 exams!

There are lots more videos about this from Reachout Australia, just browse through that playlist and you'll find heaps more 🙂

The biggest thing I hear constantly about advice for yr12 students is not to worry or let your end of year 12 marks define you. And if you don't get the mark you want, remember that there are ALWAYS other options! You don't have to go straight to uni straight after high school. TAFE exists and gives you an education as well, and in some fields can prepare you very well for your chosen career, by giving you lots of practical and hands on experience.

We also have lots of resources over here at exam stress

We know this time can be super stressful, which is why we're going to have a chat about it next Monday October 22 at 7:30 pm AEDT

(A friendly reminder that is is now Daylight Savings so those in WA, NT, SA, QLD please check out this link to check when GR starts if you are unsure :))

Nice @Puppies026! Any particular kind of psychology? It's such a diverse field for sure!

Awesome @Birdeye! Are you planning on continuing studying or are you heading out into the world? 😛

@N1ghtW1ng I'm going to continue studying for the next couple of years in (probably) a masters of communications, but I'm done with formal study of philosophy for now. Could totally see myself going back to something in academia once I've done a while in the world though.

Welcome @litgym! That sounds like an awesome goal, you'll make an excellent addition in the mental health sector! 😄 Also, who cares about studying? 😄 😄 It can be quite a change when high school finishes, I managed to put off the transition with going to an overseas school for a year but for some, it's like... now what? But it's possible 🙂

@Birdeye so much study!

@ErinsAntics @Puppies026 it can be so exciting and scary to have so much responsibility and expectations thrust onto us! But we're still kicking 😉 I agree about the friends part though, school was how I hung out with a lot of my friends so losing... loosing? that sucked but oh well. To the future!

1. When you were in high school what did you want to do? Or if you still are in high school, what do you want to do?

I really had no idea what I wanted to do (and still, i'm not certain). I just did basically one of each type of subject as I didn't have a preference. In the end, I picked a science type degree at Uni and yet I did no science in high school.

2. For those who are studying exams, what are your plans like for the future? How do you feel about finishing high school?

I'm not studying for high school exams, but I just want everyone that is to know that they really aren't the be all and end all. These days, your marks mean almost nothing and there are always ways to get into courses and things you like.

Hello and welcome @Alison5!!
To be honest, I didn't know what I was going to do either, I knew some things I wanted to do, but not whether I was going to pursue them. Even though there's pressure to know, there's no time limit to do what you want 🙂 Are you enjoying your science degree?

Also YES! There's ALWAYS another way to get in!! Preach! 😄 😄

I am @N1ghtW1ng! It's very interesting and although it's content heavy, I think it was a good decision. Science is so broad as well, so there are plenty of opportunities.

3. Did your exam marks affect what you ended up studying? Are you liking what you are currently doing?

Nope 🙂 mainly because I choose to do non exam subjects (apart from English) and knew I always wanted to go the TAFE route first then uni later. For me it was an achievement just to finish high school so I didn't want to add stress, also me and exams are not friends.I am loving my TAFE course (Community Services), what I like about doing TAFE is that all courses are a year and under which is great 🙂

@Alison5 I must say I do love the schedule that uni provides. I find it personally very helpful if I have a schedule of things like tutes and lectures to do. It keeps me going.

@ErinsAntics nice! 😄 Exam marks really are useless, aren't they? 😛

This next question is a very important one for managing stress levels AFTER the exam!

4. How can we keep busy while waiting for exam results? How do you feel about your results?

4. How can we keep busy while waiting for exam results? How do you feel about your results?

I really just focused on other things and kept myself busy. I got a part time job as soon as exams were over and went on a holiday as a celebration. I actually forgot about the results (what day it was) and things like early offers meant I didn't have to worry either. I had really low expectations so was ecstatic when I got my results. That's why I was careful to pick a course that would be too difficult to manage (so I thought) 😛

So many AMAZING responses so far! I am loving it! 😄 😄

4. How can we keep busy while waiting for exam results? How do you feel about your results?

I think I was pleased with my results. Because I did a certificate in high school, I was guaranteed a certain op score and I got two higher... lower than that. So I was pretty pleased because I didn't give a poop about what I was going to do. Because I didn't care, I think I just went through my regular stuffs during the time before results came out. But doing things like hobbies, spending time with friends or families, using some distraction strategies (we have a thread somewhere, 10000001 coping strategies and distractions)

Seems we're all feeling or felt the same towards the end of year 12!

Here's the next question:

3. Did your exam marks affect what you ended up studying? Are you liking what you are currently doing?

yes unfortunately it did affect my studies. I pretty much flunked my hsc. Im not so good at the pressurized testing and  because life was rather rough it was hard to study at home at the time.

Its been 4 yrs since then now though and i am enjoying my current studies

heya @scared01! 😄
It sucks that your marks affected your studying, there really should be a better way than standardised testing. BUT it's great that you're enjoying your current studies 🙂

@Alison5 that sounds like an effective method of getting rid of exam stress, not knowing what to do 😛

It sure did  @N1ghtW1ng however  once you can enter as a mature student your hsc marks dont really  matter anyway so its ok.

That's so true @scared01, about the marks not mattering. They're really only relevant for the first year or so out of school. And then meaningless. I only remember my score because I was going to make a joke about it because I got 14 and my sister had 5 so I was going to say I got 4-long pause-teen 😛

3. Did your exam marks affect what you ended up studying? Are you liking what you are currently doing?

My marks didn't really matter because I didn't really know what I wanted to do. I just picked something that sounded interesting, knowing that I could change later anyway. As I was struggling at the time, I picked a course at Uni that was below my ATAR so as not to stretch myself too thin as I got back into things.

@Alison5 choosing to study something/somewhere that wouldn't stretch yourself too much is a good way to go about it, I think, particularly when you're not quite sold on something yet. Did you consider deferring study since it sounds like there wasn't anything in particular you wanted to? Or why did you decide to go in to uni when you did?

Alison5Posted 22-10-2018 08:15 PM
Good question @Birdeye. At the time, I think it was important for me to get into things. If I had of taken a gap year, I don't think I could have got going again. I also didn't have any money for travel.
Whilst I didn't always like it and found it hard to motivate myself, I knew that having a schedule, so the Uni timetable and joining a few sporting groups would be good for me.
I also don't really have preferences towards anything, ever, so not sure that will change too much. Unfortunately, that's something i've just had to live with.

@Alison5 to be honest I used to be like that for a long time too, I didn't really have a preference towards what I studied I just chose business because it seemed like it had options. I always thought I was never going to know what I enjoyed doing and would just work in business because of that.
But I found my love for psychology out of nowhere, 3 years after uni and it just came to me! It gave me so much motivation and changed things so much in the best way, so don't give up! Keep trying new things too and one day you might realise you love something you never thought you would! 🙂

@Alison5 @Puppoes026 our passions can often come out of nowhere 🙂 I had my mum helping me choose what uni courses to sign up for (because I didn't care) and I just chose the first one that accepted me. It happened to be teaching and look at me now 😛 They really can just show up out of the blue, but it's okay if they don't either. Sometimes passions aren't always traditional jobs so they slip under the radar.

Very true @N1ghtW1ng and thank you for that @Puppies026. I'm keeping a broad mind and am open to all things that come my way. Hopefully I soon find something I really love and can really focus on that.
When you love something, you tend to try harder. So studying a little more, doing readings etc. etc. And at the moment i'm struggling with that. Would I be right in saying that?

@Alison5Oh for sure! I literally took like 5 hours sometimes to get through a lecture when I studied business because I was so uninterested but now as weird as it sounds I can't wait to get started on my readings for psych and really enjoy doing assignments as they are usually on topics I find so interesting!

Hahahaha aww thanks @Jess-RO ! I love quotes so that is an awesome compliment 😄

6. What are some other ways to go to uni if things don't work out?
