Health and fitness for wellbeing
If this is breaching any guidelines in terms of giving advice, I'm really sorry and this can be deleted.
I've been playing competitive sport for 6-7 years now and it's something that takes up a lot of my free time, I enjoy it and I've gained a lot of confidence and team work skills.
Lately I've been making it a habit to go for a swim or a run once a day, and it's worked wonders for my overall wellbeing. I've been doing this for about 4 weeks and it gives me a little bit of time each morning to get ready for the day and clear my head. I know I can face the challenges of the day with a mind that's free from stress and not working in overdrive. If I go at night time instead, it allows me to calm down after a day of hard work and just forget about anything negative and focus on something.
I usually run three or four kilometres, and I'm slowly swimming laps at the pool, I used to only be able to swim one lap, but now I can do two without stopping!
It's also really helped me with a lot of the issues I've had with my sleep and in turn has helped a bit with my anxiety and I know everybody is different but I think it will help a lot of others. Not everybody is in to sport, and that's ok too. I'm no health professional, I'm just going off my own experiences.
Apps I use:
Nike Running - This is cool because tracks how far you've run, how many kms an hour you're going and records previous runs so you can compare.
ADF Active - This is mainly for if you want to join the defence force because it gives you tips on how fit you need be and teaches you proper techinques but I still use it just for recreation.
Relax Melodies - I use this to help my sleep, you can layer tracks to listen to like white noise, rain, city rain, birds.
Lol. I feel like this thread may have actually inspired some to start exercising. Which is fantastic! I can say for sure that I've gotten out of the house a lot more often now
I have been looking for a similar thing for cycling @j95. Most of the stuff i have found has been super lame, so my go to is this Deep House label called DirtyBird BBQ which isn't a workout specific playlist but is definitely the sort of stuff that makes me want to ride really really fast 😛
Nice thread @j95!
I love going to the gym 3-4 times a week and running 2-3 times a week, but mixing it all up with high intensity and low intensity intervals. I always go first thing in the morning before work as well, as if I leave it until the afternoon I will never go! Recently I've been thinking I want to invest in either personal training or maybe something like CrossFit! Love the fact you have started a Bball team, that sounds awesome!
In terms of food, get on the "Super Green Smoothies" book by Sally Obermeder. Never realised how healthy and delicious smoothies could be. An awesome breakfast replacement and a great way to get your daily fruit and veg in one go.
Haha yeah our first game was tonight and I seriously had no clue what I was doing, I was just running after people but it was fun. I kept getting pulled up because I'm used to only having to bounce the ball once every few metres at footy, so it was weird!
I'll have to check out that book, thanks!!
I have basketball for the first time tomorrow night, I don't think I'll do very well because I'm not like 11ft talk like every other basketballer but it's just a bit of fun
