Health and fitness for wellbeing

If this is breaching any guidelines in terms of giving advice, I'm really sorry and this can be deleted.

I've been playing competitive sport for 6-7 years now and it's something that takes up a lot of my free time, I enjoy it and I've gained a lot of confidence and team work skills.

Lately I've been making it a habit to go for a swim or a run once a day, and it's worked wonders for my overall wellbeing. I've been doing this for about 4 weeks and it gives me a little bit of time each morning to get ready for the day and clear my head. I know I can face the challenges of the day with a mind that's free from stress and not working in overdrive. If I go at night time instead, it allows me to calm down after a day of hard work and just forget about anything negative and focus on something.

I usually run three or four kilometres, and I'm slowly swimming laps at the pool, I used to only be able to swim one lap, but now I can do two without stopping!

It's also really helped me with a lot of the issues I've had with my sleep and in turn has helped a bit with my anxiety and I know everybody is different but I think it will help a lot of others.  Not everybody is in to sport, and that's ok too. I'm no health professional, I'm just going off my own experiences.

Apps I use:

Nike Running - This is cool because tracks how far you've run, how many kms an hour you're going and records previous runs so you can compare.

ADF Active - This is mainly for if you want to join the defence force because it gives you tips on how fit you need be and teaches you proper techinques but I still use it just for recreation.

Relax Melodies - I use this to help my sleep, you can layer tracks to listen to like white noise, rain, city rain, birds.

In terms of karate i have heard from lots of people @Chessca_H that Kyokushin is the best. Haven't done it before though.
Looked more into Takewondo.
Just bought an indo board.

I really want to start going to a martial arts class (always have since I was a little kid, but could never afford it), but I'm feeling pretty self conscious about being a total beginner. I know a few people on the forums are into martial arts already, would any of you have any words of wisdom for a newbie like me? 🙂

Attendance is the key to success @Chessca_H, not skill, not strength, but attendance. Sure it'll be a bit awkward but as long as you regularly attend, you'll just slide into place. Sometimes, you might have to change clubs if you don't like them (some clubs and styles might not be to your liking) but most places have a one or two nights free trial so you can give it a whirl 🙂

Thanks @N1ghtW1ng, that really helps! Now I actually have to get up the courage to call the club I've been looking at 😛

hahahaja I tried to use an Indo board the other day, you'd think being a skater and surfer I wouldn't face plant, but I did, a few times

That's awesome @j95
I get 2 free PT sessions a year but I've been too scared to use them so far.. so good on you! I know a lot of people can find it intimidating.. I mostly just want to wait till I'm at my best so I can be pushed further!

I mainly lift weights 🏋 and on the weekend I go to 1000 steps for a little bit of cardio ☺

2 free PT sessions? that's cool @T4ils
What I'm doing is really cool it's like up to 6 people and it's for anybody but it targetted at the surfing community so a lot of the people are surfers so we get to work on stuff relevant for surfing, super cool, definitely felt incapable of some of the things last time but I did it 🙂 like we had to do this thing where we step up sideways onto like a box thing and then bring the rest of your body up onto it, staying in a squat then stepping back down, the box was so high I was like no way my little legs can even get up there.

Yes I also like lifting!

Yeah one of the good players at north went to my school. His younger brother was in my year. I won't give any more details

What do you mean a player from your school @loves netball

Nothing against north except one player from my school. Just still excited that my team won a second flag finally.
What about the new Collingwood netball; hate them even more and taking some of the best netball players in the world.

It was really weird - I just couldn't stop and the pool was closing but I really had to get to 1km. I'm one of 9 and I'm the only one that can swim @TOM-RO so hopefully they all the younger ones can swim by the end of primary school.
Yeah North had a great first year not so great second half of 2016 but still, I'm a dedicated fan either way

Could be worse if you guys were Collingwood. I get to celebrate for a year. I even got a premiers hoodie haha. I think Tom Boyd earnt all his money in one game 😉

@j95Such dedication! I'm not that good of a swimmer. It's a good question, I don't know that they'd fail school for not being able to swin? Surely not! I guess it just means they have to really care but same as you I wasn't really helped with swimming and didnt learn until much later (around 16-17 with friends). @loves netball you made me laugh about the Collingwood crack BUT I have to say, I do admire the dedication of true fans. So much passion and never giving up even with crappy performances

I only learnt to swim this year at 21 @TOM-RO and a couple of weeks back I swam my first ever kilometre - pretty proud! Last night the heat was bad, so gross!

@j95 That's a fair effort, you must have been well practiced! I actually found out that from someone that kids in school now have to be able to swim before leaving school! So legally- the schools aren't allowed to let them fail! Anyway only because you asked I'll admit - I'm a Carlton supporter *braces for boos* haha
