[CHAT] Sleep Hygiene

How I have been sleeping of late can be perfectly summarised by this image.

Who needs sleep?

Which means that I am more than likely writing this when I should be sleeping.

Okay, I am. It is currently 3:36 am and I want nothing more than sleep, but know that I won’t be getting any anytime soon. So coffee shall be my friend today.

coffee

I know this, because my current inability to sleep can be explained by medical reasons. But not always is this the case. Most of the time, I am the one to blame for my lack of a full night's sleep.

For instance …

and

the force

But most of all

slothilda

So what do these three images have in common? They basically say that I have poor sleep hygiene. Wait, what? There is a hygienic way to sleep? I hear you all ask.

Indeed there is and we will be discussing what it looks like on Monday (14th March) as well as ways in which you could be sabotaging your sleep. Hint: It may or may not involve what you do around bed time.

To find out what time we shall be discussing this in your state, have a looksi at the image below.

what are some strategies we can put in place to resolve these?

I think just being aware that there's stuff you can do that can make you sleep better- or worse is a huge step. I instantly slept better once i realised this. It was a big 'duh' moment .

I think planning a bed-time and planning a bit of time before that to get settled and do all the sleep hygiene things can be a big help!

Also @FootyFan26 @j95 i am a huge fan of naps (but getting up after 20 minutes is a must and also hard to do)! And I also love Siestas. When i was really little i lived in south america, over there everybody goes to sleep for a few hours in the hottest part fo the day!

Well for starters, I should probably be using my desk to study. A one off movie in bed wouldn't hurt, but continually watching them in bed would.

Getting a routine down pat for bed time, so the brain knows when it is time to sleep.

No electronics within an hour of sleep time.

Haha @Ben-RO it's all good - I stole it off someone else too 😉

6. What are some strategies for resolving these bad habits?

I'm just gonna look at other people's answers for this one cause I'm terrible at actually making changes.

Thats what these GR's are for @Bay52VU - finding ideas we sometimes dont think of ourselves 🙂

What are some strategies we can put in place to resolve these?

I have an app that makes me walk to turn off my alarm in the morning. Then I dont allow myself to go back to sleep.

I also have another app which alters the slight projected out of my screens so it is not the normal blue light. This changes throughout the day so it makes me drowsy as it gets close to my bed time.

We use laps at night instead of over head lights too.

My bf generally comes to bed after me, it used to wake me up heaps so we decided on a time he had to come to bed by so if I do get woken I have time to get back to sleep. Now Im used to it though so I generally sleep through

That's really cool except it would hard to sleep in the heat @Ben-RO what about if you were working or at school? Did you just drop to the floor immediately and sleep?

When I was younger I went to a few different primary schools and one of them was so strange, at 11am everyday everyone just dropped what they were doing and did a 5 minutes of mediatation before snack, so that's sort of what I'm imagining.

@j95 I just imagined people falling asleep standing up and just falling to the floor, it was really weird...

Dude the imagery in my head was the clock hitting 2 and then everyone just dropping to the floor, it was absolutely bizarre!

How do you even @stonepixie? Did you fall over then wake up again or what?

@FootyFan26 I was actually at work and was cleaning the floors at the time. I was asleep upright with the help of a broom. I have no idea how long I was asleep for before one of my co-workers woke me up. It still cracks me up to this day.

'sup guys!
Do you think I have enough time to catch up? I dunno. I cannot believe it! I was on my computer! 😛

Anyway, I have terrible sleep hygiene but I've been using music to calm, so I'm not as restless. It's been working, probably. I'll answer the most recent question!

What is the impact of good sleep hygiene?
Good sleep hygiene makes us more energised during the day.
