Hey everyone! First of all, sorry for the boring title 😛 Secondly, life can be tough at times, especially when you're trying to find a job. There are so many options out there, it can be difficult to choose what you want to do in the future.
Sometimes, there's this nagging voice in the back of our heads telling us that we aren't good enough, and that can make it even harder to go for your dreams.
Sure, deciding on a job, going through school and uni or tafe can be stressful but you're never alone 🙂 Join us Monday the 1st of May at 8pmAEST for a chat on careers 🙂

I have been both underemployed and unemployed. Neither are fun.
I remember when I first here for uni, I couldn't get a job because I already had one in my hometown. And now, I can't get a job because ... well ... I don't have one.
I guess I am lucky that I am with a DES whose number 1 priority is my wellbeing.
At first, it was hard getting knock back after knock back. But then I changed the way I judged my self-worth. It was no longer focused on how many interviews I land, but rather by how many jobs I managed to apply for and the progress I make on whatever crochet project I have going at a time.
So basically it came down to: Did I reach the goals my career pathway coach and I set for the fortnight? Did I reach my personal goals?
So whilst one needs a job, looking after your wellbeing is just as, if not, more important.

@stonepixie that is a really cool/positive outlook to have on applying for jobs/interviews - I hadn't thought of it like that before 🙂originally posted on 01-05-2017 8:55 PM
Have you experienced unemployment or underemployment? Have any strategies helped you to cope with this situation?
I mean not really, because I've never really been actively seeking employment. Also what's underemployment, is that where you're not getting enough hours or something?

No but I have seen people very pissed off about it while they've been doing shift work. I reckon they should make it a bit more stable.

Have you experienced unemployment or underemployment? Have any strategies helped you to cope with this situation?I've pretty much constantly experienced one or the other since the age of 15 when I wanted to enter the workforce. It's really rough. What is job security...?!
I certainly wouldn't say I coped with it well haha. Some strategies I can suggest is trying not to blame yourself and trying to stay positive. Reminding yourself that you are not alone in this experience (although this might make you more sad/angry at times as you feel sorry for all the other people going through it), and to keep trying to look for work.
@roseisnotaplant underemployment is when you have a job but they don't give you enough hours - very common in casual employment. Employers like to have an army of reserves ready and waiting.

Have you experienced unemployment or underemployment? Have any strategies helped you to cope with this situation?Yes Both!
With Unemployment I knew the sole reason was because at the time I A) Didn't have any experience & B) Was studying Full time and couldn't work Full time.
I eventually found a retail manager willing to give me a go and I enjoyed it for my time there. At one point I was underemployed and simply did not have enough work to live off (eg the last 10 months!) I was continually looking for another job and I got one about 1.5-2 months ago.
I think in terms of strategies I kept telling myself that the right job would pop up, I just had to be patient. And to be honest it did. And I'm an an environment which caters to my physical limitations with my foot and mostly to my mental health.

Also With strategies for coping with under/unemployment, I was linked in with a job search agency and they were amazing with me (my mental health and my foot injury) and they were constantly helping me see the positive side that I still had lots of awesome qualities and that I was still an asset to a business.I think if you aren't linked with a job search agency, talk to people around you - friends or family, sometimes another persons perspective can really help you feel better about the situation. And while it is stressful, try not to worry about it too much (I know it is so much easier said than done) But in my experience when you're stressed and feeling under the pump or overwhelmed you may not put your best foot forward which is what matters in the long rung 🙂

@May_I was AM with a disability job search agency (I don't know if I am allowed to specify the name [community guidelines] so I won't) but basically, I approached them after the place I was forced into after my injury treated me very poorly. They calmed me down, asked a couple questions, and turns out I was eligible. So I had to do some paperwork which involves getting my GP to write about my diagnosis of mental health and my foot injury (disability) and then I had to sit a 'interview' (it was more of a casual conversation) with a Psychologist employed by Centrelink and that determines if you will change or not. Determined that I was eligible to change to this job search provider.

How important is it for you to know what career/educational path you want to follow? What can you do when you don't know what you want to do?Well I never knew. I left school to do a different trade that I'm doing now, simply because I hated school and wanted to earn myself some money. Now I'm glad I'm doing what I'm doing and all the different jobs I've had in someway led me into doing what I'm doing now. I was never really too worried about it because it liking my job was really the least of my concerns when I was younger. Now, I really love my job and I'm glad I do.
When you don't know what to do you could see a careers counsellor, research different jobs, try volunteering, speak to friends about their jobs

My dream job would either be doing what I'm doing right now, and eventually having my business fully operational and/or travelling for a living (earning money how I don't know).originally posted on 01-05-2017 8:13 PM

Evening everyone 😄 It's question time! Here's the first one;
What is your dream job?
originally posted on 01-05-2017 8:38 PM
Helllloooo Everybody!!! 😄
Sorry I'm late I wanted to do a few bits before jumping online! But I'm here now! Yay
Q1. Dream career? I've never really had a career dream. Right now I'm full time in Administration with a Freight Company and I am enjoying it. It can be a bit stressful at times but overall I'm learning and I'm making progress and I'm happy with that. 🙂

Holy bamboos. It's been a while since I last joined a GR!
What is your dream job?
I don't have a dream job per say, but what I want to do is be in a job where I am able to help people and their wellbeing. So when you really look at it, there are hundreds of types of different jobs out there that cover this. The problem would be finding the one that makes me the happiest.

Oh gee that's tricky!
I quite love this current one i am doing right now tbh 😛
I think i like the idea of running an organisation at some stage or doing some kind of job where i can do more cool stuff to help make society more awesome and think more carefully about people who don't just fit in by default. Hmm that and earn squiilions of dollar.

What is your dream job?
I wish I knew, because it would be very helpful when teachers are like, 'So, what are you doing for the rest of your life?' And I say something like, 'Milliner?' (I don't want to be a milliner :P) I want to do something where I can go cool places, and something where I get to do music and writing and photography. Probably stuff with nature. Maybe stuff with film. I really have no idea.
(Although the real answer is mattress tester.)

*facepalm* I've been hanging out in a forum that has who you are replying to in the top right-hand corner of the reply. That response was for @roseisnotaplant
