What is your experience with emotional support animals

I have no experience with emotional support animals.

What is the job of an emotional support animal to you?

I guess if I had one it would be to help distract me.

What animals do you think make the best emotional support animals?

Dogs tend to be very switched on and will go with you everywhere even when you leave the house so I would say dogs but if you're at home a lot cats tend to like big cuddles and sleep with you for a long time so I don't think it's quite as much emotional support as a dog since they're trained but it's still emotional support.

What are some of the benefits of emotional support animals?

Just help people to get through tough times and act as a distraction and presence to lighten the mood.

While some of the things that you have mentioned are true, the role of ESAs isn't to "distract" you. Emotional Support Animals are proven to help in the treatment of mental and psychological disorders. https://esacare.com/role-of-esa-in-treating-psychological-disorders/ ESAs aren't some placebo effect, they have the tendency to comfort humans and help calm their emotions down which in turn help in the treatment of psychological disorders

I found this quote from Humans of New York when I was reading today that I feel is pretty relevant to the discussion 🙂

"I see something in animals that I don't see in humans. They have a focus and an energy that humans don't have. They just want to live. They aren't trying to impress anyone. They aren't trying to hurt anyone for no reason...they just want to live"

I think that's super applicable to one of the reasons why support animals can be of such a huge use to so many people...as well as supporting us, we can learn so much from them in terms of just getting by, day to day

I think the benefits of emotional support animals is that they are consistent and reliable companions who often have the best intentions and a kind heart (particularly dogs!). I feel like those sorts of qualities would really help someone in need of emotional support
