[CHAT]: Moving house!

originally posted on 06-09-2017 11:25 AM

Most of us will move more than 10 times in our lives, and because more people are renting rather than buying these days that number is going up! I'm hoping my next home is just like Howl's moving castle; it'd make moving so much easier!

Unfortunately I'm not a wizard, so it's a little more like this:

On Monday the 11th of September I'll be moving out of my current place and into a new one. So while I'm off doing that we are having a discussion about moving!

We'll talk about things like:

  • How to manage the huge stress of a move and mental health stuff caused by that
  • What to look for in a new place
  • Who can help if your tenancy goes pear-shaped
  • Tips and tricks for getting your move done as quickly as possible

So pop in and say hello oMonday the 11th of September from 7:30pm AEST to share your experiences of moving and learn a trick or two to make the whole thing easier.

@BunnyWalks hooo boy that does not sound like it was a fun time! It would have been pretty awkward if you did run in to her again, especially if it was shortly after

    Any moving horror/funny stories?

Most of the times I moved were pretty uneventful, until the last time I moved with my family - it was a week before I moved interstate for work, so I didn't unpack anything and basically slept on a spare mattress because my family didn't have time to set up a bed for me for a week. Also the house wasn't quite finished so for the first week we basically lived in a semi-construction zone.

There was also the day I moved interstate, which was also the same day the movers were moving my furniture into the apartment - I managed to make it to the apartment with an hour to spare before the movers arrived, but it was a hectic few hours!

    horror story

I had a marathon in the morning and left an alarm in our house by habit.

One morning the landlady tripped the alarm i had put on.
I was lucky that my dad was there for me at the time.

I had received a good tongue lashing and was verbally abused with some not very nice words.

Weird thing we're still in the same suburb. I wouldn't want to run into her.

Nice @safari93 😛 I remember when I went overseas for a year and when I came back, I left my suitcase on the floor for a good few weeks because I couldn't be bothered to unpack 😛 It's awesome when you make it just on time though 😄

Hey everyone!! Let me just answer everything in this post haha

Have you ever moved houses or schools before? What was it like?

I've moved houses and schools multiple times! I moved between two countries before coming to Australia, and then moved around five times before moving cities for work (moved schools five times total). To be honest, I don't really know what it feels like to live in one place for an extended period of time, so I guess for me the unfamiliar experience is staying put!

Do you think that moving to another place is a positive or a negative thing? Can it be both?

I think it can definitely be both, and possibly more of one or the other depending on whether you had control over the move. When I moved around with my family it could be positive, but for me it was mostly neutral or negative if I was leaving really good friends behind. However, moving for work was mostly positive for me - besides having to learn to be financially independent, it was a really eye-opening experience for me, and I also learned a lot and developed great new friendships (plus I love my work!)

Have you moved out of home before? What were some positives and negatives of living by yourself/with a roommate?

I currently live out of home, and the main positive is the freedom - you really can live however you like (within the law of course), and you can get away from toxic people and environments if you grew up with them. For me, the biggest challenge was the financial independence - I really didn't know how to control my finances at the start, and had some pretty tight points as a result. Also, having a roommate who is inconsiderate, dirty or doesn't ever seem to pay rent/bills on time is a huge annoyance! Thankfully not something I've had to deal with yet, but I know others who have, and it's a real nightmare.

Do you have any tips or stories to share about changing schools?

LOL do I ever! It can be pretty hard fitting in at a new school, and trying to make a new set of friends, but it can get easier over time, and eventually you'll know who your true friends are. That being said, its been a while since I was at school so I have no current advice lol

I don't have any tips exactly, but when I moved to my fourth primary school, my mum walked me up to a group of girls, introduced me, and left me. 😛 That's one way of making friends!

Hey guys! Sorry I'm late! Smiley Very Happy

Have you ever moved houses or schools before? What was it like?

Yep. I moved houses and schools when I was about 7, so I don't remember much. I was bullied at my first primary school and the people at the school I moved to were really welcoming, so it was a positive experience for me.

I also moved from the junior campus to the senior campus of my high school, which came with its own set of difficulties learning to find my way around and adjust to the new teachers/classmates. This was challenging and mentally exhausting, I found. Still, all worked out well in the end! Smiley Very Happy

Hey @N1ghtW1ng! I'm glad to be here! Smiley Happy

Do you think that moving to another place is a positive or a negative thing? Can it be both?

I think it can definitely be both. For me, it was a positive thing to move from one suburb/school to another when I was younger, as I didn't have a lot that I felt like I was leaving behind.

However I think the more we plant some roots and become settled in a place or with certain people, the harder it can be to leave. And I really liked and related to your point @redhead about moving possibly bringing up memories, particularly through sorting out/packing up stuff.

I've moved a few times. I'm also waiting on a room to come up so I can move again (currently homeless so I really hope a room comes up soon) moving is really stressful, you have to sort out all your things and that can bring up unwanted memories. Then there's tons of expenses like rent and bond, other furniture, boxes, setting up emenities (I don't spell :p) etc. That's also really stressful figuring out where the money will come from. Then there's adjusting to a new place, area, etc, not getting lost, new place to shop. Etc.
I guess that's why they sayy moving is in the top 3 stressors of life

I moved schools and houses a lot when i was younger, when I was living with my parents and when I was in care too, and then a little as an adult as well. When I was younger it was a lot different to moving houses now - back then it was really scary, not knowing where we/I was going and it was very forced and I had no option to say how I felt, and then trying to adjust to new things. Thats why school was so difficult, new people, new routine all that.
Moving now though I find it kind of annoying because you have to pack up all your crap but I also really like it its kind of exciting and a new adventure.
