[Chat] Physical Health Affecting our Mental Health

We all go through times in our lives when an injury prevents us from going to training or means we miss out on certain event. We also experience times when we are dissatisfied with our physical appearance and may even have physical disabilities. But how does it affect our mental health?

Sometimes we feel strong and powerful physically and this makes us feel accomplished.

Physical Health

But other times, it's difficult to keep up the tempo but everyone has their tough days.

Unable to keep up

Join us from 8pm (AEDT) on Monday, January 16th to discuss your thoughts about physical health affecting our mental health or post below with your ideas now!

6. If you haven't had the energy or life has just gotten in the way of exercise, how hard is it for you to get back into the swing of things? What are some things that help you get motivated and out there doing an exercise instead of a frighten?

Extremely hard - especially when you feel unmotivated and like everything is so extra difficult. I find just setting a date (and with other people), kinda forces me to do it because I don't want to blow off other people. I guess that's my motivation at the moment until I actually want to exercise again.

I know I feel better during and after, but it's starting that is the hardest part.

For me, it's very hard to get started again, to the point where i am a small amount of frighten to stop exercising. However i have realised over time that it's okay to drop the ball and the key is to just pick up where i left off, or even go back a few steps and build back up when things go pearshapped, because they will, and that's okay- i think.

Sometimes the way I get back into things is just by taking small steps.
I remember last year when things were pretty crap, I didn't go to footy training for ages, then one day I went and I sat in my car and watched, the next week I went, and I stood at the sidelines, the week after I joined in. It was partly, seeing my mates having fun, wanting to do the activities cause they looked sort of interesting and just motivation that came from idk where haha ??

I looooove that meme @FootyFan26!

Some things that help me get back into the swing of things are seeing my family members exercise and knowing that I don't want to be the only one not doing some form of physical activity, and talking to friends about what's going on for me. Most of them know that walking really helps me and suggest it to me when I'm not feeling great. When I'm coming back to it after a low period, I start myself off gently e.g. today I only did 20 minutes instead of half an hour...

Q4.

Everything that triggers me affects my mental health. Exercise can't always solve them 😞

But I like to think that exercise can treat my mental health problems 🙂

Are you someone who exercises a little lots, a lot a little or just not very often at all?

I exercise maybe once or twice a week, more if I'm feeling stressed/angry and need that release. I would like to start exercising more frequently and doing different things though...

I exercise a little lots. It took me a loooong time to get into the habit of that but holy crap now that i do it's made a huge difference for me.

I'm with you @j95 in that i notice not so great things when I don't at least do a little bit of exercise each day.

I excersise a lot, every single day and struggle if I go a day without it, I notice some things happening that aren't so great if i don't excersise, even a short walk is better than nothing

Here's the first Q:

What's your favourite way and least favourite way to exercise?

My favourite way to excercise is by going on walks or jogs (not fit enough for run for long periods of time yet).

And my least favourite is definitely bike riding. My legs don't like it at all!

Hey guys!

What's your favourite way and least favourite way to exercise?

Least favourite way would be running becasue you'd do most of it by yourself unless you're attending events.

Favourite would be AFL footy (Who'd figure?) because it requires working in a team with others and there's a set goal.

So I like sport, not exercise.

What's your favourite way and least favourite way to exercise?

Favourite: Soccer. I have an awesome team (in terms of people, not in terms of skill level 😛 ) and very much enjoy filling that sweet full back role.

Least favourite: I don't really have a least favourite. Something complicated with lots of standing around like baseball, I guess.

Also helloooo everyone 😄 Long time no see! (ish)

Aloha @loves netball (because surfing)

What's your favourite way and least favourite way to exercise?

Favourite way is either cycling, freediving or perhaps bushwalking/hiking anything that involves seeing lots of new things and distracts me from the fact that I'm not sitting around doing nothing :P. Least favourite way is probably running (sorry @loves netball!) I am too tall and my back gets sore if i run more than about 5ks.

For our next question...  drum roll  please...

2.How can exercise help our mental health?

Without going into the science of it, it releases endorphins - Happy Hormones!!

I also feel like the social aspect of it could be helpful for some people if they are doing a team sport.  Exercise could also help with body image issues for some people.

I refer to both because to me sport = competition and exercise = something to focus on a specific area of fitness.

2.How can exercise help our mental health?

Um well there's like science behind it - excersize releases endorphins or something which is good for some reason (I clearly know what I'm talking about). If you're playing a team sport there's the social aspect, often being around cool people can give you a mental health boost. Also a lot of sports and activities take place outdoors, and sometimes it's awesome being outside doing something instead of inside doing nothing.

Favourite: walking the Thousand Steps with a mate on a cool day.

Least favourite: the Beep Test. Someone sadistic designed that me thinks...

Ahhh @StarLord I agree. I did the 1,000 steps with my dad recently and I think it's one of my favourites purely because I associate it with spending that quality time with him. Smiley Happy

Also, excercise has generally had positive effects on my mental health. For instance, I went on the treadmill earlier, and the stress I was feeling from my long day faded away and was replaced with feeling proud of myself for pushing myself to exercise. Smiley Very Happy

FAVOURITE IS RUNNING

Least is probably swimming, only because of body issue reasons (I actually know how to surf Smiley Tongue)
