Everyone is creative, right?

To me being creative is being artistic, musical; it is seeing things in an innovative and original way. By that definition I am not creative, in fact I was once asked not to display my year eight art because my painting was ‘too hard to understand’. Just so you know we had to draw something that made us happy- I painted a canvas blue and said ‘water’ made me happy, I thought A+ for effort they thought not!

Anyway, high school grudges aside people use the word creative in relation to me in… creative ways, such as “what a creative car park!” or “that’s a creative way of cooking pasta”. Most of the time I think they might be making fun of my obscure way of getting things done, but may I remind you they are the ones who used the word “creative” not me. I am jealous of anyone who can draw more than a lop sided love heart and a daisy flower. I wish when I got bored I could just start drawing, or playing an instrument…

But can creativity be more than just the ability to paint or play an instrument? I believe some people express creativity through their energy or in the way they think and behave, and by that definition maybe we can all be creative.

I know firsthand that @SJG is creative in the most obvious sense; she has mentioned it on the forums before and I have seen her work, in fact I own a piece. So on Monday join myself and @SJG to see how one very uncreative person (myself) and one very creative person @SJG, navigate the world of creativity.

Whether you can draw, cook, organise well, tell jokes, write well, or even park your car well, Join us on Monday at 8pm.

Hey @Maddi_1995 ! Welcome to the session and to ReahOut!! Glad you could join us 🙂 So true about being good or bad at things, its not the end product that defines creativity but how the go about the process

Already getting some creative answers here! Next question is..

Do you think that there might be conventional ways to be creative and then there might be more obscure ways? What's an example of each? (what about instagram, journalling or fashion - where do these things fit? Are they creative?)

I would agree with that. I think that convential ways of being creative are the obvious ones (e.g. the creative arts of visual art, drama, and music) while obscure ways of being creative can include fashion (e.g. for me I try to be creative about what I wear and the combination of hair style, make up and clothing), baking and even paid work (e.g. in my job I need to come up with creative ways to engage children in meaningful therapeutic activity).

I believe that all children are creative, I know for example my little cousins are always coming up with stories and drawing. But I have also seen some brilliant creativity come out of the minds of the elderly.

Do you consider yourself creative or not-creative?? What are the things that have happened to make you think that?

Yeah...I only just realised a month or so ago that creativity was one of my top values.  It's something that has always been a part of my growing up, I have always had a natural ability to see and view the world a certain way, which encouraged my creative process.  My technique and skill has only developed over the years.  And even when I go years without painting for example, I suddenly see things from a different perspective and it becomes easier for me in a way.  It's interesting...the creative journey.

Anyone can take a picture and add a filter. But it takes a creative person to think about what it looks like, if the picture is worth posting, what sort of light would look good, etc ...

I've tried journalling many times, but I don't think my creativeness is conveyed through this method. My writing is too ... I don't know the word ... but definitely not creative.

One most definitely needs to be creative to be a fashion designer. Then there are those who carefully plan out what they are going to wear. Then there is me, I just throw on whatever. I never used to care whether or not it looked good together, but I've gotten better with it.

I tend to think that the conventional methods are the ones that people normally associate with the word creative and the obscure ones are the creative ideas that need logic to make things work.

So true - beauty is in the eye of the beholder ? I love instgram and sometimes i think i nailed it and other times i defs haven't!!!
I can't journal but i do write down random things here or there. Fashion is so hard you can look good wearing op shop clothes or designer clothes it takes being creative to make it work don't you think

Smiley Very Happy Do you think that there might be conventional ways to be creative and then there might be more obscure ways? What's an example of each? (what about instagram, journalling or fashion - where do these things fit? Are they creative?)

Not really no... I believe that all creativeness is conventional in its own right; Creativeness is good for the brain, it is an outlet of emotion (poetry is my outlet).

Fashion is a prime example of creativeness (whether we question what they were thinking or not) and it is absolutely everywhere which is great. Another is scrapbooking and I would say instagram fits in similar to scrapbooking.

I have this weird thing where if I'm bored in a lecture, I'll start doodling all over my lecture notes. When I come back to them, I can remember what was being said as I drew the things on the page.

That's really cool and make sense completely.  I remember my psych was giving me ideas a few years ago when I was struggling with study.  She said to use certain colours for certain points and to use lost of shapes etc.  Because when recalling information your mind will often recall the page layout, and you would know it was in a bubble...and it would promt you to remember the answer.  Very cool that doodling has the same effect for you!

@j95 SPORT TOTALLY COUNTS!  XD  I do yoga...(used to play netty for 4 diff teams before my injury)...but yeah!!!  You can totally connect with yourself while playing and I think that is what has a lot to do with creativity as well.

@Maddi_1995 I totally agree, art is definitely emotional!  Oh yeah and fashion is totally creative, because every individual expresses themselves through clothing.

Do you consider yourself creative or not-creative?? What are the things that have happened to make you think that?

I think I am creative, because I have always engaged in a lot of hobbies that are traditionally considered creative (e.g. playing music, painting, drawing and drama) and because I try to be creative in how I think about, do and present things in my daily life and at work and uni.

Hey Guys! I had a dream that I completely missed this GR session! That bummed me out until I looked at the time. Cat Happy

How would you define a creative person? What sorts of things do they do?

To me, a creative person is someone who lets their imagination run wild. They might not neccasarily be particularly good at anything, but an awesome imagination is key to creativeness. To me, a creative person is someone who writes stories, paints / draws pictures, makes a sculpture, Makes some music. All the stuff that one would consider to be creative, but I also think that people who are awesome problem solvers are creative as well. Sure a problem solver has to use logic, but they have to be creative in there thinking.

Ok so... does sport count as being creative? It could, somehow. If it does then yes I may be creative as I'm good at football and do a lot of sport.

I make music too....
