Live GR: All About Adulting, 7th of October, 7:30pm AEST
Hey everyone! How's it going? 😄
You guessed it! We'll be having another Getting Real chat this coming week on the topic "All about Adulting"! We'll be chatting about things like what does it mean to be an adult and how we can tackle some of the pressures that come with 'adult life'
I'll be interested to hear what you all think a 'grown up' really is and whether you think being an adult is all it's made out to be
Hope to see you there and till then, take care 🙂
@WheresMySquishy @Lost_Space_Explorer5 @Saltwaterdreamtime at least we have google 😉
@ecla34 That's so true, life is so much easier when you can look up directions or use an app. I often use apps for public transport. They've saved me so many times.
When my grandparents came to Australia, they would take buses and trains to visit other relatives who had also moved here. They had to write down bus timetables and which stop to get off at, and count the stops. But one day, they tried to catch a bus and got completely lost, so my dad had to come and find them. Then they stopped travelling by themselves after that and just asked people to give them lifts.
@Saltwaterdreamtime hehe cute!
So nice chatting with you all tonight! Hope you have a great rest of the week 😄
Wow they really threw you in the deep end there @Saltwaterdreamtime You definitely have done a good job winging it by the sounds of it!
What are you looking forward to about becoming an adult or do you appreciate in adulthood?
I appreciate the independance, I also have been coming to the realisation that i don't have to give up certain parts of my personality or interests, or change into someone super different in order to be mature, which is really nice 🙂
@featuringme you got me! 😛 I've had mad cravings to reread it recently, so i should take it as a sign 😉
@Saltwaterdreamtime that sounds daunting as anything, having to make such a huge transition so quickly 😞
What are you looking forward to about becoming an adult or do you appreciate in adulthood?
I think my top thing has been no school for five days a week. Sometimes my days would involve coming at 6am for a class before school and not leaving until 5pm due to having an after-school class. Then I would do homework until I went to sleep and work on the weekends. I appreciate having more time to myself now. I had more time in uni than I did in school, and it often gave me the freedom to do work at my own pace such as through recorded lectures.
@Saltwaterdreamtime ahahah yes!
calls are like: "please don't pick up..please don't pick up....oh hi, how are you?"
@featuringme hey how are you?
i agree, independence as an adult has it's good and downsides 🙂 (btw is your avatar from full metal alchemist?)
@ecla34 hi I'm doing fine thanks! Hope you're doing good as well
And yee its my boi Edward!!! Love him, but it's been many years since I watched the show (I'm probably due for a rewatch hehe). I assume you're a full metal alchemist fan as well, nice to meet a fellow fan
@Saltwaterdreamtime argh same here! Whenever I have to make a phone call and I hear the person I'm talking to speak, my stomach drops I much prefer emails hehe
What scares you about becoming an adult or challenges you in adulthood?
Not doing things at the 'right time' and letting people down. I think the demands on young adults are so hard now. For a lot of 'adult' or professional jobs, not only do you need a degree a two, but sometimes you need things such as a portfolio of your work, years of relevant experience, good references, a licence and a car. It's almost impossible for people who have just finished studying to have the money and time to complete all these requirements. You could also be competing with people with more life experience who have changed careers or lost their jobs due to the pandemic. I applied for a job recently that involved working with youth and had a graduate rate, so I thought that they were looking for a young person or recent graduate, but the people who interviewed me and who were working in that position there were much older. One thing I wish I had known before I started my degree is that you needed a lot of experience to get a lot of jobs in that field as well as a degree. A lot of employers I've encountered want someone who has done that particular job before, and I've been told by one place I interviewed at that one year of experience doing that same job wasn't enough and that they were looking to save money on training by only hiring more experienced people.
What is an 'adult'? What do adults do? Do you consider yourself one?
In my opinion, an adult is someone who has come of a certain age. I don't agree with other definitions that an adult is someone who is fully grown or developed because I don't think we ever stop growing up.
Adults have more responsibilities and can do more things in their community than children. But everyone's adult life and roles are different.
I'm legally an adult, but I often don't act like one.

i guess adulthood is kind of a mixture of maturity and responsibility? but then again these things come at different stages for different people so it's hard to define! i'm like you @WheresMySquishy , sometimes i'm an adult...but only sometimes 😛
@Saltwaterdreamtime accountability is good way of putting it!!
@sunnygirl606 love the last one! 😛
Yeah, accountability!
