Live GR: All About Adulting, 7th of October, 7:30pm AEST

Hey everyone! How's it going? 😄

You guessed it! We'll be having another Getting Real chat this coming week on the topic "All about Adulting"! We'll be chatting about things like what does it mean to be an adult and how we can tackle some of the pressures that come with 'adult life'

cat adult.jpg

I'll be interested to hear what you all think a 'grown up' really is and whether you think being an adult is all it's made out to be

Hope to see you there and till then, take care 🙂

I guess for me the transition into adulting happened in two ways, one way was it just happened because I did a lot of things growing up that adults don’t even do, and also I left supported accomodation/the care system at 18 with little support and was thrown into it.

Then I forgot that people don’t get in jokes and funny shit and I’m meant to be professional. Last week, I answered a customers call by saying “hey what’s up P man” and then I dawned on me that’s ridiculous and I wanted to curl up in ball
P MAN hahahaha

@lost_space_explorer5 would have been totally appropriate if I knew the guy more than just a few phone calls and was a mate. Oh dear.

@featuringme  That's so true. It's hard when you don't have loved ones or friends around you.
I went to hospital by myself this year and it made me anxious not knowing what the results of my tests would be, and then they told me when I was by myself that I had to have emergency surgery. Even though I was alone, at least I was keeping in touch with my uncle and updating him and my parents came shortly afterwards.
Another thing that was a bit scary was going home from somewhere by myself for the first time, and I ended up getting lost and going in the wrong direction. Smiley LOL Luckily, I managed to get back to the shopping centre within walking distance of our home and my mum met me there.

@WheresMySquishy omg that sounds so scary, glad to hear you had some form of support during that time! And haha I don't have the best sense of direction either, especially since my map reading skills are ... questionable Smiley LOL

@Lost_Space_Explorer5  I was really shocked because I didn't think I would be having surgery, or that it was so serious. I didn't feel that bad. Luckily, the hospital wasn't far from our place so my parents were able to come quickly and pop in and out.

I guess not knowing how to do something and being afraid I won't have anyone to help me out! Also making mistakes. Also I guess I sort of worry that me growing up means my family is getting older and I have less time with them. Also having to make important decisions

@Lost_Space_Explorer5 yeah that's a mood, having to make decisions and feeling like you're running out of time to do so 😞

What scares you about becoming an adult or challenges you in adulthood?

going out of my comfort zone more and more frequently

phone calls

emails....why so many emails Smiley LOL

@ecla34  I can relate to the emails thing! I had to send several today. Either I don't hear from anyone or everyone emails me at once. Smiley LOL
I also don't like phone calls. I often say for people to send me details by email rather than me having to call them because I'm busy during the day and may not pick up straightaway, but they often end up calling me and asking me to call them back anyway. Smiley Frustrated

I’m a big fan of the pre phone call text or email and I say “call me if you’d like to discuss” aka DONT CALL ME and reply to this email/message instead yeah thanks

The amount of times I just let my phone ring out because talking on the phone spooks me... it's a lot

@featuringme I wish schools taught more practical stuff! We have a question on that later on speaking of the topic 😄

@Saltwaterdreamtime  I can relate to that so much! Sometimes I forget my own phone number too.
One time I had to call a place I used to intern at to tell them I wouldn't be coming in because I had super bad food poisoning, and I was dehydrated and tired so I sounded so weird in the message I left.

Here's our next question:

What are you looking forward to about becoming an adult or do you appreciate in adulthood?

(I had to laugh at this gif, it's like me)

Driving for sure! I'm able to go to the shops whenever I feel like it, and I can drive other people around and drop them off at places. I'm not too sure why driving is so much fun, probably because of the independence I feel when I drive.

Also, as an adult my parents have been a lot more relaxed with what I do, so I can pretty much go out whenever I want to and can do more things. When I was younger, my parents didn't let me go on sleepovers, but I had a sleepover with my school last year, so I think that restriction has gone away!

More questions!

What are common challenges adults come across and how do you deal with it? Do you have any tips for managing life stressors that come with growing up?

Adult life has quite a few challenges...work, studying, relationships, just to name a few. Therapists and psychologists are always available for you if you need help handling the difficult situations that come with growing up. Additionally, try to practise some self-care and prioritise your wellbeing. Some forms of self-care could be going for a walk outside or reaching out to people you trust, among various other things!

There are so many. Something that has been hard is watching family members get older and needing increased care. It can be hard to see them like that and accept that they are getting older or different from how they used to be. I've tried to deal with it through self-care, focusing on my hobbies, talking to and looking at different supports, asking how I can be there for them, researching their conditions, chatting to friends and family.

Oh definitely @WheresMySquishy 😞 That sounds so hard

That reminds me of the thing where as you grow up you realise people who looked after you are just as lost as you are and have their own difficulties. Like you can really look up to someone and then find out they weren't the person you thought they were

@Lost_Space_Explorer5  That's so true! People can look at their family members differently as they get older and relationships can change. Childhood heroes or celebrities can also turn out to be awful people.

Hm managing finances, finding work, maintaining friendships, managing stress, keeping up with hobbies, studying, looking after yourself, looking after others. As for tips I'm not sure maybe like remembering you're not alone and not being afraid to ask for help if you need?

@Lost_Space_Explorer5  Not being afraid to ask for help is a big thing. Even though we're adults, we don't always have to be completely independent. 🙂

Making mistakes and having to keep on keeping on. It's hard to learn from things you regret, but i guess it means there's something to be got out of something you're not proud of or are embarassed about?
