Live GR: Body Image, 13th July 7:30 AEST
Hey guys!
This Monday we're going to be having a live Getting Real chat surrounding Body Image! 😄
The way we view ourselves and our bodies is so important to talk about, because it directly impacts the way we think about ourselves and the way we treat ourselves!
We're all so different in lots of beautiful ways! But a lot of the time we're fed this toxic idea that there's a right or wrong way to look and that's just not true! Things like advertising and social media, as well as other societal pressures, really feed into this and it's hard to escape the negativity when it comes from so many different places 😞 So we'll be chatting about ways to challenge this!
We've been talking a lot about Body Image here on RO this month
There's the awesome Guide To: Body Image!
as well as the Let's Chat: Body Image ! 😄
Which you should check out! 😄
We'll be kicking off this live chat at 7:30 pm AEST and we'd love to see you all there!
Body Image can be a super confronting issue to talk about, so if this GR brings up some triggering feelings both Kids Helpline and the Butterfly foundation are really good resources to reach out to! We really want this GR to be as safe and welcoming for everyone as possible! So we also encourage you to check out our community guidelines here as well as RO's 6 ways to be body positive page
Can't wait to chat Monday! 😄

Question 1: What is body image?
What is body image?
I think body image is about how you see and perceive your physical features and appearance. It can include the thoughts and feelings you have about how you look on the outside and it's something that can change over time.
So many awesome answers @Bananatime04 @Hozzles @Lost_Space_Explorer5 @ecla34 @WheresMySquishy
So we've all said it's how we perceive and feel about the physical side of us and our body, and how it impacts us
Hi, all! so excited to chat!
What is body image?
How one views their physical self, and the thoughts and emotions that result from that view!
Thanks guys!
question one: What is body image?
If I had to put my own definition to what I think body image is, I’d say it’s the perspective on a persons own body or how someone sees them self. It can also be heavily influenced by a number of things and often compared to the standards set by society.
🙂
@Bananatime04 that's such a good definition, it can for sure be affected by so many things and like @WheresMySquishy said it can also change over time. I think another thing to point out is that it can be both positive and negative at the same time -- often people talk about 'positive body image' and 'negative body image' like they're opposites, but sometimes people can like some aspects of themselves, but dislike other things!

oooh yes such an excellent point @Hozzles about how we can feel both positive and negative feels about ourselves and our body.
And highlighting what @WheresMySquishy said about it changing over time
@Hozzles I think that's so true! Sometimes people can focus on a specific part of themselves that they don't like (I know I do!).
It's time for the second question since you were all over that first one! Good job everyone! 😄
What are some things that you like about your body/ that your body lets you do?
What are some things that you like about your body/ that your body lets you do?
I like my hair and eyes 🙂
I also have an appreciation for how strong our bodies are and how resilient they are.
@Bee I agree!
People have also told me I have pretty eyes. Sometimes they turn very red or get crusty, or my eyelashes grow the wrong way from the problems I have with them. Most of the time, you can't tell I have those problems just by looking at me though.
What are some things that you like about your body/ that your body lets you do?
When I was younger, I used to like playing bowling and doing rock climbing. It was hard for me to do a lot of sports when I was younger because I have exercise-induced asthma but I'm glad my body let me do them! My body also let me do other hobbies such as playing video games and singing.
My body has also fought off a lot of infections. Once, my mum and sister got the flu and another virus at the same time, but I never got sick despite being in close contact with them. I think my immune system took care of it before I was able to have any symptoms. I was also still walking long distances by myself, catching public transport and doing work when my kidney stone was stuck in my ureter. A lot of doctors were shocked that I was able to do all that for two and a half weeks but I'm really grateful that my body was able to handle it and I didn't collapse alone in the street or anything.
@WheresMySquishy oh yeah, I'm happy my body is able to push through. I feel like I never really got sick as a child, and still I feel like my immune system is pretty strong. I can tolerate pain pretty well (maybe too well? Apparently when I broke my arm and I was put under for them to reset it, I kept flapping it around like nothing was wrong and they had to give me extra medicine! )
@Hozzles That's so funny! That must have scared the doctors.
My body has a tendency of waking up early from anaesthetic. The first time I had surgery, I said 'Hello! I've had such a nice sleep!' to the recovery room nurse and he got startled and came running, saying I wasn't expected to wake up yet. Something similar happened the third time as well.
The fourth time I had a general anaesthetic, they ended up putting an EEG on me and drugging me up massively. It was like my mind was there but I could barely move at all. My mum was laughing her head off because I was like a zombie.
@Bee hahah it's okay, it is funny! I remember I was also pinching myself as I was coming to, 'wow, I really don't feel anything!'. bodies are weird!
@WheresMySquishy hahaha being so cheery and alert waking up from surgery! That poor nurse
@WheresMySquishy talk about scaring the nurse! I am always wiped out by anesthetic, the following day I'm still dopey haha
