So, here's a question to get the conversation going 🙂

Why is it important to be proud of who you are?

I think everyone has a different definition of being proud of who you are...pride in yourself reflects that love you have for yourself and it paves the way for being assertive about your rights and respecting yourself and others

I'm not super tech savvy, so I'll apologise in advance if I get things wrong tonight everyone!

I think this is a really important question, and would love to hear what you all think! I believe that everyone needs to be proud of who they are. It's important to our mental health and wellbeing to appreciate just how amazing you are!

It's great to have you here @Naomi-wearitpurple 🙂 (And everyone else @j95 @honky @May_!) Purple just happens to be one of my favourite colours 😉

Why is it important to be proud of who you are?
To be totally honest, I can't think of a coherent answer to this. In my head, it's kind of "Of course it's important!" Because you are you, and you should be proud of what makes you you, who you are, because you are an amazing person! Even if you don't feel like it 🙂

Such a hard question to answer, and have to agree with @N1ghtW1ng, it's hard to write a coherent answer. I agree with @Naomi-wearitpurple in saying that it's important for our mental health and wellbeing. I think if you're always worried about what others think/say, it can really have a negative impact on our health, thus being proud of who we are is important !! Work ittSmiley Tongue

Why is it important to be proud of who you are?

Tricky question I've spent about five minutes trying to think of an answer and all I've done is switch Spotify playlists 😛 I guess you are you, and you are awesome, and that should make you proud. Right?

Why is it important to be proud of who you are?

Being proud of who you are is a shield. If you can know and appreciate yourself and the great and special things that make you who you are, then you're going to be able face the tough stuff, and the not so smart people that you'll encounter in life. Being proud of who you are is also something that is quite visible, it makes others feel safer and stronger about being themselves, and enjoying that, instead of feeling stuck behind expectations that other people made up for them.

@Ben-RO that is an awesome response, and I agree entirely! I find being proud of myself helps me to not give a damn about what other people think of me (because I'm a bit of a weirdo :P). Basically, everything you've said 😄

@honky haha that's awesome! We've all got to "work it" 😄

it is important to be proud of who are you because it means you can feel good about who you are and be confident in being you, and you can be more resilient so when people try to knock you down, you're proud of who are anyway

I like your points @j95 @DirtWitch . So if i understand right.... if you know and have discovered the awesome aspects of yourself and appreciate that you're working hard to make life better for yourself and others, then you have that to fall back on when someone acts like a bit of a dick. Because you don't automatically accept what they are saying about you and how they perceive you. If you learn to be proud, you don't get swallowed up by some of the ridiculous and insensitive stuff some people believe about others.

@Ben-RO I definitely think having a strong and healthy sense of self is a greater buffer against bullies or even just people who mean well but unintentionally cause harm. I think a big part of it is also embracing aspects of yourself that you might not like as much, but instead of feeling shame over that you accept it while giving yourself the space to improve.

Those are some awesome responses, now it's time for the second question!

How do you support others to be proud of who they are?

originally posted on 31-08-2017 8:32 PM

One of the good things about the Internet is that now there are so many different resources you can use to educate yourself on how to support LGBT folk and other marginalised people. I think one of the best ways you can show support is to read up on history and know your stuff...understand how LGBT people have historically been treated and how the modern movement was started by black and Latina trans women, the issues that LGBT people are facing now..and of course accept that you will make mistakes and to correct yourself and apologise when other people point it out!

That's super interesting @DirtWitch, a really thought out response! I think you make some awesome points, especially at the end about making mistakes and correcting yourself. One big way to support rainbow people is by acknowledging that people use different pronouns. Many of us grew up only learning his and her or he and she, but there are so many more out there! Some people like using gender neutral pronouns like they and them. Sometimes I still slip up on this one with some of my closest friends, but correcting yourself if you do slip up, or making the effort to ask in the first place is also really empowering for rainbow people. One of the most important things is to not make any assumptions because everyone is an individual !
