[CHAT]: Transitioning to higher education

Year 12 is over, you've got your results and you're sitting there thinking: what happens now?

Lectures, tutorials, majors and minors - the lingo used in the glossy pamphlets can seem like jibberish at first.

Then there's the other worries you might be having: How will I make new friends? What do I do if I'm not enjoying my course? Is it possible to pay attention in lectures without falling asleep? (Hint: it's not :P)

So whether you're just starting out or you've been studying forever, join us here at 8pm AEDT on Monday 23rd January, or click reply to start the discussion now!

YOLO @Alison5 maybe see what happens? it could be amazing

What are you looking forward to about studing at Uni or Tafe? What are you worried about?

Well when i started masters i was soooooo excited about studying something I was so interested in and I was super worried that i'd be a loner sitting on the grass eating lunch by myself everyday but then i just tried to be okay with being alone. I think it was an important thing I had to learn, like just be present in where im at and then i just loved it. I picked subjects that interested me which i hadnt really done in my undergrad cause i kind of followed a specific path. Also the campus coffee was AMAZE and i was coming from working so i really enjoyed that change

@Stealth_ninja I relate to that on so many levels. I was so afraid of being alone in first year because at school I always had my group. But I guess I have learned to stop caring to some extent and would like to be able to embrace being a loner at uni even more heheh

@j95 can you ask your work for support in the areas you think you need to improve? Or the tafe?

omg @May_ @Asche i feel the same!! I never want to throw anything out cause im like omg thats all my hard work just going down the drain but I guess the hard work was the result/completing undergrad or finishing/passing the subject and I have that on my record for life BUT it's still so hard.

Plus i think im a secret hoarder haha

I go to some classes @loves netball dependings. Some of the classes we discuss stuff and get to debate topics and I like that, usually if its just a lecture in the middle of the day on a friday or something i just skip it and we do these online quizzes so you can do that from anywhere - how great is technology!

What do you want to study/what are you studying/what have you finished studying at uni/tafe/apprentiship?

I finished a psychology degree in 2015, and this year I'm starting a post graduate diploma (4th year) in psychology. (Scary!)

I didn't find much of a change in terms of friends going from high school to uni. I had no friends in yr 12 basically and had few friends at uni

In what ways do you think higher education will be/has been different to high school?

Less routine (no longer 9-3), new people, focussed study, different teaching, new expectations, more importance
