[CHAT]: Moving house!

originally posted on 06-09-2017 11:25 AM

Most of us will move more than 10 times in our lives, and because more people are renting rather than buying these days that number is going up! I'm hoping my next home is just like Howl's moving castle; it'd make moving so much easier!

Unfortunately I'm not a wizard, so it's a little more like this:

On Monday the 11th of September I'll be moving out of my current place and into a new one. So while I'm off doing that we are having a discussion about moving!

We'll talk about things like:

  • How to manage the huge stress of a move and mental health stuff caused by that
  • What to look for in a new place
  • Who can help if your tenancy goes pear-shaped
  • Tips and tricks for getting your move done as quickly as possible

So pop in and say hello oMonday the 11th of September from 7:30pm AEST to share your experiences of moving and learn a trick or two to make the whole thing easier.

I've only ever moved house, twice. Once when I was like 2 or 3 or some young absurd young age, and in uhm 2014? It was actually stressful. Mainly because we had so much stuff everywhere and moving old antique pieces of furniture was a bit difficult so they didn't break more!

@Bee moving is definitely stressful! Although it's easier when you're really young because everyone else does all the work for you 😛 Moving antique furniture sounds like a struggle.

@N1ghtW1ng it was a bit. One dressing table which amazingly fit in my boot without the mirror, has a broken leg which barely sits on it and another is very loose, so you have to pick the entire thing up to even more it a couple cms!!

Hey @redhead! Thanks for coming on tonight 🙂

Have you ever moved houses or schools before? What was it like?
I've moved... twice. And changed schools four times (not including moving to high school :P) I don't really remember much to be honest, although I do feel sad now because I had some good friends but I've lost contact with them. I have two siblings and choosing rooms was a bit of a stress too, everyone trying to get the biggest room 😛

Hi everyone, I'm here☺️ Can't be here for long tonight, sorry!!

Have you ever moved schools or house before, what was it like?

Yes Ive  moved schools and houses before. Moving schools is hard, it's hard to make friends who have already developed friend circles. Moving houses is exhausting!! I've moved houses probably about 4 times nowSmiley Mad

Yep, moved house when I was little and I still remember it. It was very exciting watching our house be built day by day.

Moving schools...yeah that was the harder part. I've moved schools about 4-5 times during the high school period and I can say that while I made a lot more friends, retention wasn't as easy. It's hard moving when I felt I was already settled in.

@roseisnotaplant it's nice when we adjust quickly to moving. How did you find making new friends?

@RevzZ ah it's awesome to watch your house being built! It never seems as big as it does when it's being built.

@N1ghtW1ng I think at that age it's easier to make friends, especially as the new kid because everyone wants to say hi 😛 Plus there were a bunch of new kids that year, so we were able to hang out together.

Good luck with moving @j95! I agree, looking at houses can be pretty fun.

@roseisnotaplant how old were you? Ah nice, the new kids form their own group 😄

I think it's definitely both. Positives are things like moving to a new place, fresh start, those sort of things. Plus it's an opportunity to clean up things. Negatives would be the stresses of moving, dealing with the packing, money, getting things to places, that sort of thing.

    Time for the next question!

Have you moved out of home before? What were some positives and negatives of living by yourself/with a roommate?

I would like to move out of home, but I haven't yet. Financially I'm not sure it would be possible and also family stuff. However one negative I anticipate of living by myself/with a roommate is that there might not be someone around to kill the spiders - which is me revealing how much of a scaredy cat I can be, haha!

Other negatives would probably be loneliness and/or the possibility of not getting along with roommates. On the other hand, the independence would be glorious!
