High School Student Support Squad!

I'm a little jealous of the uni student support squad, so I thought we should probably start one for people in high school like me.

Here's a place for all things high school - tests, exams, staying organised, picking subjects, hating trigonometry, and all that fun stuff 🙂

Hey! I am in Year 10 (just by the way!)

So it is coming close to exam week... ugh

And I have tried quite hard not to procrastinate but it has got the better of me.

Luckily I still have a week to try and get organised before I get slapped with exams.

So does anybody have any tips on ways not to procrastinate? So I can get organised and study and finish assignments. Or just like any studying tips that have helped you really well.

Cause I find it extremely hard to sit down and do assignments, homework or study (especially since it is pretty boring)

Thanks for listening/reading!

Ah exams, @Bubblycoco 😛
To be honest, the best advice I can give on procrastination is just starting (which is terrible advice :P) When I try to tackle my assignments, I like to outline them, which helps me really know what the heck I have to actually do. It makes writing a large assignment more like doing several small activities. I also tend to put on a music playlist or a tv show or movie I've seen a dozen times already as a background to keep that distractable part of my brain distracted so the rest of me can focus on writing my assignments 😛

This might sound a bit silly, but knowing what you're studying is really helpful too. Setting out what you're actually studying so you know what you're looking for and such (like key words you're focusing on). It kind of changes studying Science to studying Sound, Light and Forces (or whatever it is :P).

The last idea is to try everything. There's lots of online resources (namely google) that have so many articles on tips to study and so on. Something will work 😛 Good luck!

Hey @basketofmonkeys

I'm fine now, just wrote 3/4 of an essay in a night hahah. Sometimes I can't focus at school usually when it's writing, Idk why I just concentrate better at home.

Looking at my week, from Thurdsay- Sunday afternoon i was busy and I just was stressing myself out because I have had no motivation to do any work and sometimes it just so happens that I do my best work last minute but yeah not a good habit to get into.

Anyway some nights I get overwhelmed with even the smallest things and sometimes I'm just upset and break down. I'm trying to adjust and work my way around these times. It's my own fault really cause I won't let anyone know what's going on.

Anyway thanks for listening Smiley Happy

Haha this is a wonderful thread @roseisnotaplant! 🙂

I'm not in high school anymore, but my one tip for you is don't think too hard. Scores, results, marking, it doesn't matter what kind of grade you get, because you will always have a way to get where you want to go. It might take a bit longer, but you'll still get there. (Plus in QLD at least the system is rigged anyway)
You can do it! Whatever "it" may be 😉

@roseisnotaplant back when I first joined here there were heaps of members in high school, and it was mainly only mods who were in uni. But of course everyone gets older over time... 😞 😛

@rosieisnotaplant I think this is a great thread!
I'm with @lokifish when I joined nearly everyone was in high school and only mods were in uni etc. I'm not longer in school, in fact high school was too long ago to think about (It wasn't a positive experience for me) But it's great we have this thread to help 🙂

Lets get some help... Anyone else in high school want to explore anything?

I'm the same! I can't believe it's my fourth year out of high school. It feels like I could just put on my school bag and uniform and walk back to school. Haha. It is incredible how much has changed since then. But - as a past student and soon-to-be secondary school teacher, I'm more than happy to offer support and reflect on my experiences 🙂

@Jardin

Hi Jardin! I saw you post in another thread about the HSC, and thought I'd tag you in here because it could be a good place to talk about it. Or you're welcome to create your own thread 🙂

What's going on for you with school?

Thanks @Birdeye for tagging me.

At the moment I'm in year 12 doing the HSC (in NSW) and I'm struggling to make myself to study. Even though my parents keep reminding me that it's okay as long as I try my best, I know that they have certain expectations of me. I feel like I am going to let them down- especially with what ATAR I get. Most my cousins did really well in the HSC, and got ATAR's in the 90s. Also my parents both did really well in their high school exams and it just feels a like lot to live up to.

Everything is just really confusing and stressful at the moment. Everyone keeps asking what I plan to do with my life- but I'm not sure and terrified that I'll make the wrong decisions.

I don't won't to be stuck in a job I hate, but at the same time I don't want to disappoint any one.

I am just so indecisive and unmotivated at the moment.

I've moved around a lot in my life, but up until a few years ago, I had always lived in cities. Though now I live in the country and I often feel so isolated and alone and away from everything. I can't walk down the street and catch a bus anymore. The only way to get anywhere is if my parents drive me- and they are often really busy (not to mention they have 3 other kids to look after). I just wish I could get out of my house more often. Sometimes I feel really trapped and just want to get away from home for a while.

hey @Jardin thank you for sharing, I'm sorry to hear you are feeling this way.

I'm not in the exact same boat as you as i'm only in year 11 but I can definitely relate to most of the things you are saying. I have 2 older siblings and one of them got an OP 3, so I have high standards to live up to. Anyway I completely feel the same way about the future, I know exactly where you're coming from it's scary deciding something that you will have to do "the rest of your life".

But on a much happier note I hope you know that there are so many pathways to get into what you want to do and so many people change their mind during courses and they switch and that's totally ok you can do that if you ever want to.

I see you mentioned that you don't know what it is you want to do and it's so hard especially at this age to pick a career choice that you will want to do in the future. The only advice I can give you is to find what makes you happy or what your passionate about and follow that, make a career out of it. 🙂

Also If you ever get the urge to get out of the house then go for a walk or run around or near the house, sometimes fresh air can be amazing.

Anyway sorry for rambling on hope I helped. Smiley Happy

Thanks @hmm789, you did help 🙂

Its quite relieving that there are other people experiencing very similar things to me- even though I wouldn't want anyone to feel this way.

I am the oldest out of 4, so I wouldn't know what its like to have two older siblings, but it seems like a lot of pressure.

Also I have to say I am so glad that there are different pathways to get where we want to these days. A part of me is still really scared that all the doors will shut on me- or that people will look down on me for taking certain pathways. But guess its better than if there were no alternatives at all.

Hi @Jardin,

I feel the same, I love it when people can understand what I'm going through but its also disheartening because you know how shit it feels and you would never wish that on anyone else.

Yeah it's amazing, my friends mum is in her 50's and she has gone back to Uni to study and get a qualification in a field she is really interested in so it's never too late 🙂

Welcome back!
