Self-care during lockdown
Hey guys!
I just wanted to make a quick post to see how people are practising self-care during lockdown in Melbourne and if anyone had any tips? I know this is a really hard time for people so it would be nice to share some fun activities that people are doing from home. I'm really enjoying exercising, going for walks and baking 🙂
I spend time with my cat, Miko. I live alone but being around him really brings up my mood. Beyond that, I try and spend at least 30 mins outside in the sun a day, I take my picnic blanket out and do my uni work in the sun.
Sitting in the sun everyday is so important!! I really need to start doing this
Omg me too! I often feel like a lizard in the sun hahaha
Just lounging in the sun and recharging 😊
I make sure that I always have time to play with my puppy! He is the most wonderful thing for my wellbeing and reminds me that there are always happy things in life. He has helped me survive every lockdown so far and I'm so grateful to have him as a lockdown buddy.
I'm the same with my pup!! We got her at the start of the year and I'm so in love
Awwww yay! Terrier buddies! 😊
What's your's name? My puppy's name is Chicken haha
Hey everyone
Great thread and love the ideas so far!
One thing i found quite helpful was to actually have a big cleanup. during the first lockdown that lasted months i ended up buying brand new furniture and redesigning my room. slowly ive been working through the house and updating new furniture or just destashing things.
During this lockdown-we are up to week 2 going on 3 very soon but so far ive redone my front yard, even replanted a few things to make my front yard cleaner and done a massive cleanup. heaps of stuff went to the tip or out on the kerbside for free. i am currently working on the backyard now. destashing and making things tidy has kept me busy plus also makes me feel like ive accomplished something rather then just sitting around.
i also have taken up a sport so whilst there arent any competitions or socialising allowed i can practice some things at home.
Hi @Bingo1234 ,
Over lockdown last year, I started doing some creative writing and journaling to fill the time. I found this gave me a space to empty out my noggin when it got full of thoughts. Luckily, I have been able to keep it up since then. I have completed a couple short stories, and have had over 34 entries in the journal so far! It was definitely a life saver when I was feeling down or stressed during lockdown.
Journalling is a great idea! I feel as though this is a useful tool to let out all of your thoughts (good and bad)- I definitely need to get into this
@Bingo1234 Bringing this back again seeing as half of Australia is in lockdown and honestly I'm kind of struggling with the concept. I feel disappointed for the school students but I'm also sad because I had plans to go places with friends after uni finished. I also am still working out of home (masked up of course) and it seems simple but the fact a lot of shops have shut makes it difficult for me to even get lunch and I'm worried about having enough to eat. This is combined with it seeming like there are more homeless people around my work these days. It's little things that are wearing me down and I feel guilty for not doing more in my free time.
One thing that has been bringing me life has been the Aussie comedian Jimmy Rees who is doing very funny videos explaining the current situation by personifying all the states arguing with each other 😆 It's good because I don't need to look up the news! I also definitely need to get into walking again.
@StormySeas17 this video cheered me up- I'm up to the group therapy part 😆 thanks ❤️
@StormySeas17 I hope you’re doing ok! Lockdowns are incredibly frustrating and I can definitely relate to feeling like every little thing wears you down while you’re in the middle of it. It’s good to hear that you can still get out and work at least! I work in healthcare so it was definitely a blessing for me to get out of the house here and there during lockdown. I would definitely recommend getting back into walking/ some form of exercise! It really helps me clear my head and boost my mood. Hang in there!!
@Bingo1234 Thanks! After things got worse I've been relegated to stay at home sadly. But I'm going on a lot more walks and also gotten back into my crafts so not all is lost 🙂 Now I'm just crossing my fingers hoping it doesn't spread to Vic.
Hey @StormySeas17
I am glad to hear that you have plans to go on lots of walks and to re-engage with some crafting. That sounds like an awesome plan.
What crafts have you been creating? 😄
@Matt-RO thanks! I've also gotten back into doing yoga at home. Apparently my gym might also have a selection of online classes I can do so going to explore that too!
I do cross stitch at the moment! I'm working on a project that has a bunch of squares of each letter of the alphabet with a border and picture corresponding to the letter. I'm on D for Daffodil at the moment so a bit behind to make it to the end of the year which was the original timeline! But it's small but also enough to be rewading 🙂
I love all the tips in here... such a great idea for a thread! 😀
@StormySeas17 thanks for the intro to Jimmy Rees - too funny!!!
I didn't realise he did comedy, I recognise him from ABC Kids. 😆
Miranda is my lockdown go to - so bad it's hilarious.
I agree with you @Bingo1234 that exercise is a huge help - and being able to get out for work is a great opportunity to have a bit of normality in what's a strange time.
Lockdowns are the worst, but all these ideas really help.
Thanks so much for sharing them.
@Philippa-RO Omg I had no idea he was from ABC kids! Crazy world 😆 I have definitely been exercising more- sadly I'm working from home now. The small blessing is being able to see my partner in person though. My parents had a fight a couple days ago but they seem to also be dealing with it, but it sucked seeing as lockdown is only going to get longer. Luckily I'm getting better at setting boundaries with them.
Hi @Bingo1234
This post has been really useful for me, I'm in Sydney right now and there's been talk about a potential lockdown due to the new rising cases. Because of this, I've been trying ways to prepare for a lockdown. Best wishes for everyone in Australia, we will get through this!
Thanks to everyone who has contributed!
Hey @Anzelmo, I'm currently in lockdown as well and it's been tough! It's crazy to think that we're stuck at home again after all this time. How are you going with it so far?
One of my top tips for lockdown is to get creative with video messages - I've been sending my friends and family videos of myself each morning with a different snapchat filter on, and it always makes them laugh. It's nice to see each other's faces when we can't be in the same place together.
I'm doing alright,
It's cutting into my uni break which sucks, but I know that school students have it worse since it's their whole break. I'm upset that I cant spend more physical time with my GF 😕 but slowly finding ways to still spend time with each other.
