Health and fitness for wellbeing

If this is breaching any guidelines in terms of giving advice, I'm really sorry and this can be deleted.

I've been playing competitive sport for 6-7 years now and it's something that takes up a lot of my free time, I enjoy it and I've gained a lot of confidence and team work skills.

Lately I've been making it a habit to go for a swim or a run once a day, and it's worked wonders for my overall wellbeing. I've been doing this for about 4 weeks and it gives me a little bit of time each morning to get ready for the day and clear my head. I know I can face the challenges of the day with a mind that's free from stress and not working in overdrive. If I go at night time instead, it allows me to calm down after a day of hard work and just forget about anything negative and focus on something.

I usually run three or four kilometres, and I'm slowly swimming laps at the pool, I used to only be able to swim one lap, but now I can do two without stopping!

It's also really helped me with a lot of the issues I've had with my sleep and in turn has helped a bit with my anxiety and I know everybody is different but I think it will help a lot of others.  Not everybody is in to sport, and that's ok too. I'm no health professional, I'm just going off my own experiences.

Apps I use:

Nike Running - This is cool because tracks how far you've run, how many kms an hour you're going and records previous runs so you can compare.

ADF Active - This is mainly for if you want to join the defence force because it gives you tips on how fit you need be and teaches you proper techinques but I still use it just for recreation.

Relax Melodies - I use this to help my sleep, you can layer tracks to listen to like white noise, rain, city rain, birds.

I've been trying to get back into walk/jogging but just moving is groan-worthy. 😛

I'm hoping I can keep up my routine during winter, even the swimming. I'm looking forward to a bit of a weights session instead of footy training tonight. Just ordered a fit bit online, hopefully it arrives soon!

I got my fit bit and I'm pretty happy with it. I just spent over an hour at the gym, working in my tris, chest, did over half an hour on the rowers and 25 minutes on the treadmill too. I'm pretty happy with my effort considering I didn't want to leave the house in the first place.

Today I rode my bike further than my local supermarket - to footy and back, I'm pretty happy with that!!

Wow @j95, that's some solid cardio you're doing there! I don't think I could go that long on the rower or treadmill Smiley Surprised

Also, how have I just discovered this thread now? Health and fitness FTW! I think the best part of exercising and working out for me is it allows me to set little goals for myself, and I can actually see the progress I make towards those goals. I'm finally starting to get back into form at touch footy, and I'm also getting back into a steady gym routine after injuring my shoulder.

I really am loving this app at the moment for fitness called Seven  there's an iPhone version too. Basically you do a pretty brutal (but very short) workout for 7 minutes, it guides you through all the steps. You get three lives a month, and if you miss three workouts you lose and have to start again. The goal being to go for as many months as possible doing the workout every day. The longer you go for, the more workouts and achievements you unlock. For someone like me this is enough to get me doing it every single day 😛

Second day in a row jogging! So proud 😛 I'm trying to walk my dog every day, instead I jog rather than walk. 😄

Anybody got a Fitbit or similar? Are they worth it?

Oh and @j95, Fitbit's are worth it I reckon! I have a standard Fitbit Flex and it's all I need for  now, but if you are going to get one, maybe aim for the Fitbit Charge HR. That way you can track your heart rate at footy training and things like that. I find the Fitbit's help just to give that little added push to keep moving to get your step goal, or even some of the challenges on the app are great to do with some mates for a bit of competition.

I actually was going to go and get one today @Zekk because Dick Smith has them super cheap now that they're closing down, but I completley forgot haha, so I'm going to get one tomorrow I'm super keen! And the charge hr sounds awesome, I'll check it out a bit more but I'm pretty sure that's the one I'll get.

Nice! I think you will love it @j95. I got my Flex for free, but if I had to buy one the Charge HR would be the one for me too 🙂

I have this app on my smartwatch called FitCat, basically you have a cat and the more you walk, the more money you get to feed the cat and buy it stuff.

When you stop moving it walks about the "house"in your watch and does hilarious stuff like drink out of the toilet. When you walk it starts walking down this street on the screen with you 🙂 Anyway, i love it.

Used to have a FitBit It was useful when i was getting the hang of being aware of what i was eating and how much exercise i was getting. Now that I am a fair bit healthier i've palmed it off on eBay and am just using Fitcat for the lols.

I've found that even if I don't have time set aside to go to the gym, pool or for a run even parking a little bit further away than normal or getting on at a stop further away is still real good because its a few minutes at the end of the day to just chill

@j95 Lol. I've been guilty of parking a bit further away just to get some exercise. Especially if I know I'm going to be spending the whole day studying or something. I do find that walking a longer route or a route you've never tried before towards a destination makes it both exciting and definitely better for exercise. I'm sure we've still all got a sliver of that childhood curiosity of exploring places we don't know Smiley Happy

What is HIIT? Do I dare try it?

High Intensity Interval Training is when you train 100% and then have recovery periods of less strenuous exercise. I guess it depends on what type of training you need.
