1000001 COPING STRATEGIES & DISTRACTIONS

Hey! So @j95 and I came up with a cool idea to have the longest list of coping mechanisms EVER.

Use this list when you're feeling down as a way to get through the day or night!

Help us add to it by giving us ONE SUGGESTION PER POST 🙂

My first coping mechanism suggestion is:

  • SNUGGLING YOUR DOGS FOR 5 MINUTES. (Cos dogs are the best)

Doing something tactile like making a terrarium, colouring in or collecting shells.

Listening to music, watching a comfort show/film, calling a safe person.

Hot or cold self-care showers, moving, walking, stretching, or moving somehow.

I like to have an emotional first aid kit - if something happens I have go to self soothing exercises that I like to do

My favourite is the Hot Chocolate Meditation which I got from an Instagram account @Journey_to_wellness_ where you try and feel the sensation of a warm mug in your hand, and when you take a breath in imagine smelling warm hot chocolate, and breathe out like your trying to cool down the hot chocolate

Creating ambience in your room! Buy fairy lights, lava lamps, or candles so that at night you can look forward to your room being glowy/twinkly!

Inspiring videos are a great idea @A_Friend. There are some brilliant documentaries as well that have inspiration at the core through netflix 🙂

One coping strategy I have been using is making photobooks of family, friends and important moments to help me celebrate the people in my life. It's been helping to keep me busy, but also something I can look back on when I have a bad day

make a poem.

There's no real barrier in poetry, so go ahead and write about whats on your mind 🙂

Drawing can definitely help. I always draw on my arm, but my parents hate it when I do that.
They can’t stop me! 🙂

Watch Another Dirty Room!

(CW in link for germs/yucky stuff, for anyone who might find that upsetting, but the gross out factor can be a really good distraction, and has also been an incentive to clean out my depression hovel many times!)
