Health and fitness for wellbeing
If this is breaching any guidelines in terms of giving advice, I'm really sorry and this can be deleted.
I've been playing competitive sport for 6-7 years now and it's something that takes up a lot of my free time, I enjoy it and I've gained a lot of confidence and team work skills.
Lately I've been making it a habit to go for a swim or a run once a day, and it's worked wonders for my overall wellbeing. I've been doing this for about 4 weeks and it gives me a little bit of time each morning to get ready for the day and clear my head. I know I can face the challenges of the day with a mind that's free from stress and not working in overdrive. If I go at night time instead, it allows me to calm down after a day of hard work and just forget about anything negative and focus on something.
I usually run three or four kilometres, and I'm slowly swimming laps at the pool, I used to only be able to swim one lap, but now I can do two without stopping!
It's also really helped me with a lot of the issues I've had with my sleep and in turn has helped a bit with my anxiety and I know everybody is different but I think it will help a lot of others. Not everybody is in to sport, and that's ok too. I'm no health professional, I'm just going off my own experiences.
Apps I use:
Nike Running - This is cool because tracks how far you've run, how many kms an hour you're going and records previous runs so you can compare.
ADF Active - This is mainly for if you want to join the defence force because it gives you tips on how fit you need be and teaches you proper techinques but I still use it just for recreation.
Relax Melodies - I use this to help my sleep, you can layer tracks to listen to like white noise, rain, city rain, birds.
I heard that too, they have to swim 50m I think, what happens if they can't, do they fail primary school?
Does now make school swimming lessons compulsory? @TOM-RO My family couldn't afford it/ mum couldn't be bothered filling in the form, so I never did school swimming. Yeah the 1km wasn't too bad I just went for a swim one night and just kept going and going and going, only stopping for 3-4 second breaks every few laps.
hahaha, Carlton 😛 I'm a North Melbourne supporter
@j95, swimming is pretty hard! I used to swim, so when I used to get into the pool after not doing it for ages, I used to think I could do a lot.. I would do like one lap and be so breathless hahaha! I love walking though and sprinting when it doesn't give me blisters..
I mostly go to the gym and lift weights, it is my favourite thing! If I am ever feeling not myself, sometimes it is because I haven't been to the gym in a little while
@Ngaio-RO what do you want to know about sport? I hate rugby btw
@loves netball what I'd love to know from you, and others if interested @j95, is what is it about certain games that really connects with you so you enjoy going back and rewatching them. Like the 2011 netball world cup final.
@Ngaio-RO australia beat new zealand by a goal in extra time, nothing better hahahaha
Actually the best game I've seen THIS year was the ANZ championship grand final: Queensland firebirds vs NSW Swifts (I didn't like the result), but it was so intense to watch and the talent. It went to double extra time, whoever gets two goals ahead wins. When the game went into extra time I was jumping up and down on the couch. Unfortunately the game isn't on youtube, otherwise I might have watched it a hundred times by now.
And for AFL: PREMIERS finally - I'm a doggies fan
@loves netball there's a guy at my work who is a HUGE Doggies fan, and the Grand Final was on the day of his 21st. He was sooooo happy and there's now a Doggies poster on the wall of our office, haha
If I can ever get myself to wake up and get up earlier, then I'll start going for runs/walks with the dogs in the mornings (it's so much cooler then, if I can get up early enough) and if not then, instead in the evening.
Because fitness is important! And so is exercising my dogs 😛
Pre season footy training started a few weeks ago, swimming is the only reason I'm a little bit fit to cope with it.
@loves netball Doggies fan over hurr
Although I am more an NFL enthusiast! Seahawks - Tyler Lockett!!
@Bree-RO I know nothing about the NFL 😞
There's a new australian national netball league starting because they kicked out the kiwis so the ANZ championship no longer exists hahaha GO VIXENS
Hey @loves netball i saw the ANZ championship this year it was such a good match!!! Shame they don't have it anywhere!
I don't watch sport but I'm thinking maybe I should start. I did watch my brother's cricket match last week and that was so exciting, mainly because I was so proud of him!
And in regards to my own health and fitness, I just went on the treadmill, yay!! It's something that I'll do if I notice myself starting to feel really anxious and it kind of helps me shift my focus a bit and calm down. Great thread @j95!
