Weekly Wellbeing Activity: Treat yo self- do something you wouldn't normally do for you

Weekly Wellbeing Activity: Treat yo self- do something you wouldn't normally do for you

So many of us are aware of the awesome self-care activities threads and Weekly Wellbeing threads, but this Wednesday we are going to deep dive into Treating Yo'self!

What is treating yourself? To me, it's a little different to self-care (more information on self-care here). Treating yourself is a part of self-care but it's extra, momentous, luxurious. It may only be used at a certain time, place, or before/after a special event. It can be used to reward yourself, motivate yourself, or to help you recharge and reinvigorate yourself in a way that is fun and memorable and often preceded with a sense of joyful anticipation, as opposed to recharging with 'everyday' or 'normal' self-care activities like getting enough sleep and drinking enough water that are important but maybe not as engaging. Treating yourself is about the experience as much as it is about the benefits, people!

Oooh, a very good topic! Smiley Very Happy

What do you think is a key difference between self-care and treating yo'self?
I always like to refer to Maslow's pyramid when referring to self-care:
maslow-pyramid.jpg
Self-care is a pretty general term that pretty much means what it sounds like... taking care of yourself! It can be something as simple as drinking more water, or going to sleep at the same time every night.

Treating yourself, like you said, can be a little extra. While it may not seem necessary for your health, I do see that it can fit into esteem needs and self-actualisation (maybe even belongingness needs, if you're having a good time with friends?). Making yourself feel good psychologically is never a bad thing!

What is a favourite treat yo' self activity and what lead you to do it?
Having a really long bath (with bubbles and bath bombs!) and reading in it. It's just a good thing to enjoy time to myself -- reading in the bath is the best because I (usually) have no distractions! It's a good way to relax and recharge.

Re: Weekly Wellbeing Activity: Treat yo self- do something you wouldn't normally do for you

I love this WW activity, thanks so much for starting this up @Tay100 !

I really love the concept of Treat yo' self, and having really special things that you do for yourself. I love your term "joyful anticipation" - that's so perfect! For me, it's the whole experience of planning something nice, and then having that experience of looking forward to something, knowing that I've planned a treat for myself, that's just as enjoyable as the actual "thing".

My first one is taking myself out for brunch somewhere pretty near the water - I love to sit by myself, maybe with a book, look out at the view, and do some writing or thinking. It's rare for me to take time out like that, and I really love coffee and yummy brunch food, so there's something about brunch and a water view that always feels really indulgent!

My second, more recent Treat yo self is buying myself a pretty plant for the garden! I pretty much never buy flowers or get bought them lol - mainly because the cats destroy them- but I do love looking at pretty things, and like making my space feel a bit nicer. So my latest indulgence is picking up a flowering plant, or orchid, or new succulent from our local markets every now and then.

This post made me think back to a really nice morning I had after I'd finished a massively busy period with exams/ life/ family commitments - I treated myself to a new plant, made myself a coffee and sat in the sun and admired them!

My final treat yo' self activity is a bit different - it's researching and planning trips, and also looking back at trips that I've taken myself. It really makes me take a step back and remember what a huge place the world is, and how grateful I am to have seen the small parts of it that I have. It makes me excited about the future, and is also a reminder that we never quite know what's around the corner!!

This isn't my photo but I have been there and it was mindblowing, it's a place called The Arches in Utah. Unlike anything I've ever seen and some really fun hiking.

@Hozzles  I love how you've related this to Maslow's hierarchy of needs. The way I look at it is that this is the stuff that really feeds my soul Heart Heart

Re: Weekly Wellbeing Activity: Treat yo self- do something you wouldn't normally do for you

Hi everyone,

Thanks for posting this up @Tay100

What do you think is a key difference between self-care and treating yo'self?

For myself, the key difference between treating yo’self and self-care is by how you invest in your happiness and wellbeing within a moment. What I mean by that is that with self-care, its like a personal medicine for your overall health (physical, mental, social, etc.), whereas treating yourself is like bring the most joy in your life for a brief moment. Treating yourself means to let no worries come at you while are taking in every moment to enjoy your respite, such as going to a spa and just not moving an inch to relax and enjoy the peace. Wanted to keep this explanation simple.

What is a favourite treat yo' self activity and what lead you to do it?

For me, its watching a movie in the cinemas. It is not something I do very often, as it mostly depends on the movie haha, I love spending time with either myself or with friends/family watching new films that are released in cinemas. They provide me with a new story to watch and listen to, without any other worry from the world and life around me. Plus the popcorn is always a go to snack with those kind of events haha ;P

Although I think I need to find another treat myself option.

Re: Weekly Wellbeing Activity: Treat yo self- do something you wouldn't normally do for you

Thanks for tagging me @Tay100 😊

For me, I read the word 'treat' as spending money. I never spend money on myself. I will always jump at the opportunity to spend it on someone else if it's going to make them happy but I really struggle to spend a single cent on myself. So when I treat myself it often involves buying something nice or going someplace nice for food etc.

A few of the things I enjoy treating myself too on the odd occasion are getting a massage, getting a pedicure, getting my haircut, going to a nice place for a meal, buying myself a gift as a reward for finishing an assignment or making a small achievement that took so much out of me. And my absolute favourite is booking flights somewhere!! I am a bit of a travel addict and don't cope very well if I don't have a flight booked so that's the biggest way I treat myself is by booking trips away to escape 😍

I love the call upon an actual theory, I never thought to do that! And I love a classic bubble bath as I am a self-confessed Lushie!

What a great response, thanks so much! What a lovely location- places can have so much to us, spiritually and culturally and with experiences/memories! Going to them and being present there can definitely be a big treat yo'self moment for sure!

I love the medicine analogy to define the difference between self-care and treating yourself! Very snazzy!

Oml, I love going to the cinemas for a few select films a year too: usually by myself too actually! I love the escapism...admittedly, I always get my snacks elsewhere to satisfy my weird sweet tooth hahaa

Yeah money can be a huge thing for sure, huh! It's about going and beyond: a little or lot! I wish I could travel more, but I guess I use online shopping in the same way- I also tend to do this after assessments is done as well heheee!

@Hozzles I have dropped soooo many books in the bath doing that it's ridiculous! Smiley LOL They all survived though!

@Tay100 super cool idea for a WW! Heart
I really resonate with a lot of what everyone's already mentioned here. To me, self-care is doing things/ not doing things, in order to feel physically, mentally, and emotionally nourished. So things like doing things you love, getting enough sleep, or even not going out on a Friday night when you're tired and giving yourself that break. Heart
Treatin' yo self is different in that it's something a bit different and a bit special! And it's special because it's something you don't always do Smiley Happy Like if you finish a semester at uni or a reallly long work day Smiley Tongue (fantastic motivator Smiley LOL
Something I treat myself with is books!

I either go on a library run (libraries are awesome! Heart) or do some damage at this really cool second hand bookstore near my work (honestly, so lucky it's not on my way too work, i have no will power Smiley Tongue)
