[Chat] Motivation and goals

Motivation! What is it good for?
Well actually motivation and goal setting is really important! Without it we had have no direction in life, no idea of where to go or what we want to achieve. If we don't set motivating goals then we end up aimlessly walking around questioning why we aren't getting anywhere.
But how do we go about setting these goals? Join us on Monday the 20th March at 8pm AEDT to find out, or click Reply to start the conversation now!
Ray, when you're on the Titanic, you load the lifeboats. You don't stop to yell at the iceberg.

A few of us have mentioned SMART goals, but there might be other strategies we can use too...
How can we make goals that work?

Make goals that work?Small and realistic. The more you succeed with your goals, the more likely you will create them and they will become more effective over time with practice.

Do you find making goals helps you to feel motivated? Do you stick to them?
Goals help me feel motivated in the short term i.e as i'm making the goal (hahaha), then I kinda lose my passion and therefore don't stick to them.
I think the size goal is important and making sure it's a smart goal - specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-based.

I discovered smart goals through therapy - they were taught to high school aged students.originally posted on 20-03-2017 9:08 PM

They definitely help with motivation! Can be really tricky to stick to them though. I find the what am I doing today? thread helps me to come up with goals, and then three positives of today is where I can (hopefully) celebrate achieving those goals. Then that positive reinforcement helps me feel motivated to do it all again the next day 😛

Do you find making goals helps you to feel motivated? Do you stick to them?I find it really useful to create mini-goals for short-term things like school work or other things that is going on because then it motivates me to actually get them done.

Good luck with your first SAC @roseisnotaplant!
Where do you think your motivation came from? Did you motivation waiver?
I think my motivation came from the fact that writing is something I really enjoy. It's something I don't think I'm terrible at (which is a real endorsement for me to say about myself, haha!) and something that I'd been wanting to pursue for a while. The structure of NaNo helped me, especially being able to update my word count as I went and track my progress with a progress bar and a graph. I think that held me accountable a bit, if that makes sense.
Having said all that, my motivation certainly did waver at times. I didn't really plan before I started writing so sometimes I'd sit down and have no idea what was supposed t happen in the next scene/chapter, and writer's block would set in. And other times I'd succumb to doing something passive and easier like watching TV

I've been motivated in things I enjoy, like others have said.
Where do you think your motivation came from? Did you motivation waiver?
I think it came from a desire deep inside. Wanting to reach a goal and an end point. Wanting to succeed. In long-term things it definitely waivers, however i'm usually pretty good with short-term things. To the point where I almost become obsessed actually.

Where do you think your motivation came from? Did you motivation waiver?
For this case my motivation came from past experiences and the fact that I have always wanted things to be better for people, as well as myself, and I saw a gap and decided I'd try it out

I did my first practice SAC today @FootyFan26 - not looking forward to the real thing 😛originally posted on 20-03-2017 8:20 PM
@FootyFan26 @roseisnotaplant ahhh I remember SACs 😛 (I sound so old right now, but I only graduated in 2014 hahaha). They seem really stressful at the time but once you finish year 12 they honestly don't matter. So try not to stress too much (easier said than done I know, but just trust me :))

@lokifish I generally don't stress about them but now that I've failed unit 1 english I have to get through the next three units or else I have to redo the subject and don't graduate!Where do you think your motivation came from? Did you motivation waiver?
I don't know where my motivation came from and that's a problem because I find it hard to get motivation so if I knew how to get it I would be doing much better in school. I don't know what you mean by waiver though.

Right, I get it now. My motivation waivers constantly. Some days I'll sit in class staring out the window and some I'll sit there the whole time and focus. That's something I need to work on.originally posted on 20-03-2017 8:19 PM
I've already failed an English SAC @j95. If I fail another unit I have to redo a year of English so the pressure's on! If you fail enough units you do have to redo a year.
