So tell me: Why do you think World Mental Health Day is important?
what's the big deal? DO you think it's important?

To me Mental Health Day is important because we just don't talk about it enough. 1 in 4 people will have a mental health issue in their lives and every single person on the planet knows someone who is currently going through a tough time, you just might not know who it is.

Despite that, it's invisible a lot of the time, it's silently dealt with and people feel scared or even embarrassed to talk about it. We have such a small understanding of the huge potential there is out there in the world of mental health to not only deal with tough stuff and illnesses but actually go beyond recovery to an awesome life. Days like this help people begin to get an inkling of what's out there 🙂

Why do you think World Mental Health Day is important?

To raise awareness and to provide a place to bring up issues that we might not usually talk about. I think I just repeated what everyone else said 😛

How does World Mental Health Day help raise awareness of mental health issues? What can we do to raise awareness of mental health issues?

WMH can open up the conversation surrounding MH within the wrkplace or anther organisation that acknowledges it.  We can raise awareness by sharing our stories or even making people aware that the day is WMH Day which may make them interested.

Time for another Q 🙂

What is Stigma? How does it cause problems?

What is Stigma? How does it cause problems?

Stigma is a negative feeling associated with something, in many cases, mental health.  It can cause problems because it can deter people from revesling MH issues and those issues can then go untreated which can really harm a person who feels like they're alone.

Footy's definition is pretty spot on, I think it's interesting though because everyone''s Stigma interacts, and that means that community's have stigma about things like mental health and that might make a person feel more stigma about their own health stuff. Likewise with families, everybody's attitude impacts everyone else's . So if you impact a community and reduce stigma, you help the people in the community and if you help the people, you slowly change the community view too by opening a space for more conversations. I think that's really cool.

What does Resilience and Recovery mean to you? Have you got a gif, quote or something else that sums it up for you?

I guess resilience is what helps us recoverfrom setbacks that we may face.  If we slip up in recovery which is common, resilience is what helps us keep un track and stay motivated to continue with the recovery process.

It seems to me like we're kind of on the right track, we're talking about it a little bit, we have things like RUOK day etc and that's great. However the focus still is on the illness side of mental health. There's more to it than that, there's cool stuff like having a growth mindset which isn't just about getting better, or being "normal" (whatever that is) it's about being amazing! I think it'd be good to help people understand the potential there is in being open about mental health stuff and how it's so much more than this idea of getting better or not having an illness.

In today's society, is getting help for mental health issues easy or hard?   Where can you go to seek help for mental health issues?

It's definitely easier than it was! But it can still be a little tricky. It also depends on what's happening like if it's really tough, have a chat to someone on a phone or text line like the ones we have in urgent help and get through that tough moment first.

Or if it's not overwhelming but still not great, have a chat to us here at RO, or talk to KHL- who are great at working out what to do next too, or chat to your school or uni counselor. All of these people can help a bit, as well as helping you to figure out what to do next.

And of course, last but not least, friends and family. They can be great although they might not always know about all the options that are out there so it's good to talk to a service too :).

Getting help can be difficult because of the stigma surrounding it but it's easy because there are available organisations and counselling services out there, a lot of which are very moderately priced, if priced at all.

To seek help you can call helplines like KHL or Lifeline, you can use online websites or email services as well as talking to a counselor or well being person at your uni or school if you have one. Talking to your GP can be a great start as they can refer you to a psychologist with a mental health plan.

I think we can help change the Aussie stigma around mental health by giving it more publicity and sharing statistics that show that there are a lot more people suffering than many may think which may surprise people and make them realise that the people that they are around may be affected by the negative attitude towards mental health they might have.
